I think Jim Lampley is one of the best play-by-play guys in all of sports, but as we all know he can get carried away only pointing out one fighter's offense and completely ignoring the guy who's winning. What I don't understand is how the team can see Mayweather's straight rights landing again and again and only comment on how Ortiz hasn't been hurt. I'm sorry, but do you score points in boxing by taking punches? Ortiz's eye was swelling up pretty quickly and it would have been completely shut by round 7 or 8. I think that was lost in the madness of the ending - it wasn't a close fight. Some people scoring the rounds 2-2 are listening to the commentary instead of looking at the actual punches landed. How did you guys think the crew did last night?
Showtime has the best team. HBO's B-Team with Roy, Papa, and Kellerman has surpassed their A-Team. HBO needs to make changes.
As a trio, they're way too old. Merchant is still funny but it takes him about five minutes to finish a sentence now. When he reaches the end he's forgotten what he was talking about.
I think Steward needs to be replaced by RJJ, he sucks. Merchant's interview last night showed why he's still the best in the game at 80 years old. While Lampley is an overly emotional fanboy, he has a great voice for commentating.
Lampley "tries" to be fair, and I think beneath it all, admires Floyd's boxing ability. But sometimes, after Stewart or Merchant make a point, he rides with that, a bit too much.
I don't feel Lampley is biased against Floyd. He loves Oscar and Shane but don't remember anyone bringing him out of line lately. He gets overwhelmed by his own emotions. Again (maybe I'm just seeing into it) he looked like on the verge of tears in the end.
Lampley likes the good story..like most journalists. He was riding for Ortiz that second round, despite the fact he was getting plastered just so he could talk about his background. It's the ultimate fairweather guy Lederman that's the problem. I honestly think he just listens to the announce team and formulates his scoring off that.
Lampley drinks so much now, that his work is inconsistent, he is either hyperemotional and attached to a particular fighter, how he is overly negative and ignoring all the good action in the ring.
They both sucked. As far Lampley getting over-excited. Gus Johnson practically has an oral orgasm everytime a punch grazes someone "He's hurt! Froch's hurt! His legs wobbled that time... I saw it guys."
Showtime's commentary rules. HBO is too biased and/or ridiculous "Bang, bang, bang!". Kellerman can be great or embarrassing. Lampley's almost always embarrassing. Merchant is ridiculous. Steward's great and should move to Showtime.
