Lampley is one of the worst punch by punch guys in the world and also terribly biased in almost every fight.
I think you Americans would love Sky Sports's Ian Darke. He's the best play by play boxing commentator in the world. Absolutely outclasses Jim Lampley who I still like by the way. Darke's knowledge is second to none and he's a great atmosphere builder his voice is perfect for commentary. Is biased to nobody and tells it how it is.
Don't like this trio. It really is time for some fresh blood and i've been saying this for awhile. They are always biased towards one fighter, and at times they only call the action for one fighter. I like Max and Roy together, it seems as if Max is over his crush on Roy (he used to ride his nuts wayy too hard), they provide some great commentary. The Showtime team is good too, I just hate Menefee's (sp.) voice.
Jim- "HARD LEFT HAND BY (INSERT FIGHTER NAME)" Larry-"I don't think that punch landed, Jim" ...meanwhile that same fighter may have just gotten tagged two or three times.
Lampley can be annoying at times but I don't have an overall problem with him. Same goes for Steward. I think whenever a commentator isn't able to hide his biased opinion and it shows during the play-by-play, then it is time to go. I've felt that way towards Merchant for years. Time for HBO to retire that dude.
Ian Darke is the ****. He's amazing, sees everything and spot on when describing what's going on in a fight. Yep. Lampley's tone of voice and the passion in which he speaks are great, but as far as puncy-by-punch goes he's useless. Whenever a punch makes a noise, or is thrown with power, he'll point it out loudly, but most of the time the punch is never landed.
Merchant has always been a tool that talks down the event he is paid to work. They should do us all a favor and fire him. I'm tired of forking over money and then being forced to listen to Merchant chew negative words about everyone involved in the game all night.
I agree that Ian Darke is the best. He and Jim Watt are a great team. With big fights, I usually go back and listen to their commentary and almost always prefer it. What was annoying to me about Lampley was that he was telling his whole story about Ortiz's backstory and didn't even stop to mention that Ortiz was getting drilled with right hands during his story. Then, Floyd lands a clean uppercut and he incorrectly shouts that Ortiz landed a big straight left. It's as if the fight was moving so fast that he didn't see what actually happened.
floyd landed 6 power punches in the 1st and then landed 13 in the 2nd...jim talks about 2nd round going to ortiz "floyd's not landing as much this round"....nuff said RIPPING FLOYD IN THE CORNER, floyd making him miss as he gets off the ropes....which one is it? lol jim
I think Jim Lampley is one of the worst play-by-play guys in boxing. He is nothing more than a cheearleader for HBO's fighters.
"He's been caught in a pacific typhoon!!!" Classic stuff. The thing with Darke is he is a bit predictable with his "And (Boxer X)'s dream has died!" after a tough loss. It's a bit over the top.
I counted 3 separate times in the fight the card where Lampley would ask Merchant a question and it would be like a 10 second pause before he answered it. Steward and Lampley are still good, but Larry needs to be replaced, dude either is drunk beyond usefulness or is getting senile. Things I did like though: Much better flow of fights compared to Mayweather-Mosley, a fight ends and another one in less than 5 minutes it seemed. All the fights turned out to be decent scraps, and the two I was most suspect about Vargas-Lopez and Morales-Cano turned out to be real barn burners.
Darke will tell you a fighters history, tendencies, statistics, his personal opinion AND still tell you exactly what is happening in the fight right now. Perfect example... Watch dela hoya vs mayweather with HBO commentery and you have a boring fight. Watch it again with Ian darkes commentary an you have a completely different experience. You can close your eyes during a fight with Darkes commentary and still have a clear idea whats going on
