Growing up I was never a Lennox Lewis, but when he retired, I definitely gained more of an appreciation for him. He was the last undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. A guy with that type of achievement on his resume should have a job on HBO for life. He should have all the time in the world to perfect his craft as a commentator. I think Lennox was at his best when covering the heavyweight bouts. Unfortunately, the division isn't getting it done. Word on the street is HBO forced him out, and I don't like it.
they must have taken into account some online opinions... he was called a deer in headlights etc before they let him go.
A heavyweight championship does not guarantee you a ****ing lifetime commentator job... especially not when you sound like a slow fat kid with asthma. HBO made the right choice here. Unfortunatley, they made the wrong choice altogether by hiring him in the first place.
Lewis was a horrible commentator he's lucky to have kept that job as long as he did. Not trying to be a hater Lewis was a great HW fighter but it was painful over the years listening to him as a commentator.
Yes indeed. The only thing that kept him on air this long was his heavyweight champion credentials. He should consider himself very lucky to have kept the job for that long.
My thoughts exactly. The last broadcast during the Arreola-Adamek fight was the final nail in the coffin, it looked like it was the first time he was commentating. During his time there he slowed slow progression, but this last time it looked like he went back to square one. Whether people want to admit it or not, HBO has a certain standard and Lennox simply wasn't cutting it. Foreman had charisma in his voice, Roy offered great insight, Lennox had non, everything that came out of his mouth was basic, that job is not for him.
Yeah right Jim "Bang Bang" Lampley, who calls phantom punches that never happened. Larry "Bitter Drunk Old Man" Merchant just hates on mayweather & any pure boxer that is on the network Max "I'm in way over my head" Kellerman is a disgrace. Til this day I have no idea how he got a job on HBO How do you expect someone that is green with potential like Lewis to succeed when he is surrounded by guys that don't complement his style?
Lampley and Merchant have their critics, but theyre simply the best, theyve contributed in making HBO the #1 boxing network, Kellerman is not quite there, but Lennox is just horrible, bottom line, there are too many other boxing insiders who can do that job better than Lewis.
Dont talk about lamps and larry!! They are the face of hbo boxing!!! Now go find another thread to invade NEWBIE!!!
Yeah, great fighter, not the best commentator, though he could be funny at times ("Pavlik is a tough cookie from Youngstown!!" being among my favourites). They should get Roy back.
