Bill i bow to your obvious superior knowledge ..on reflection i do agree ...altho ..yu mentioned tech ability and elitism ...as much as i love the fight ..Hagler/Hearns was less skills and more sheer aggression ...great all the same ... also thx for the heads up ..im gonna look for the two Chacon fights yu mentioned ... The thirst for pugilistic excellence continues ...lol
Bill and Addie you guys have become Gents whose knowledge and observations of the sport ,i totally respect and admire.. heres a lil topic for ya ... Bravery or stupidity ...Yu gotta respect HEART!!! I hope this thread gets some legs. This is the first website/forum I've ever posted on and I'm enjoying it very much. Addie, Bill Butcher, RogerB you guys are awesome. Glad to know you exist. All the negativity gets old pretty quick, it's good to finally talk about the love for the sport. Great Hearns video RogerB. I watched the first, then stopped and decided I'd hold off until I could enjoy the fight in it's entirety. Aside from the Leonard and Hagler fights I haven't seen many of Tommy's old battles, though I've always been interested. I'm going to keep an eye out for your guys' posts and comments in the future.
Welcome aboard COOK'D ...yu soo right about the negativity , Bill B and Addie have enlightened me ... Hearns was the Guy ...many people may try but few prospered ...his left jab a thing of beauty ..his right hand a rod of correction .. He was one of my fave fighters ...
Welcome to ESB, although I am pretty new here myself. Nice to see another gent who is truly passionate about the sport. Very nice discription as well as the story with Larry Merchant in your earlier posts, it brings back a lot of good memories on the emotions while watching such a bout. For the first Morales vs. Barrera fight, regardless of who should have won, they both earned great respect and no one can see a loser among the two, pretty much as close as it gets. Eric is still my favorite fighter, since he embodies what I see boxing is meant to be. Barrera is quite a warrior himself in the ring and possess skills equal to Morales but have tendencies to be bitchy at times. Still though, without Barrera there would be something amiss in the great Eric Morales.
Morales was a great world champion and had many great fights after this maybe im wrong but i think this fight took more out of Morales then Barrera.
Eriks handspeed declined i felt after this fight maybe that was him moving up in weight but here he had quick hands after the first Barrera fight that didnt seem to be the case.
Its hard to tell, I think it ended the ABSOLUTE PEAK physical versions of each fighter but because both were so genuinely great, they were still able to be a cut above the rest (unless vs each other) right up until their 130 lb days. At certain points in time... both Erik & Marco were ranked 1 & 2 in the 122, 126 & 130 lb class (especially 122 & 126 were they ruled with an iron fist with the exception of 1 or 2 off nights) Possibly the greatest rivalry in history - all things considered.
Its funny... Morales was actually known as both a powerful AND fast puncher at 122 lbs but once he moved to 126 his hands - although not sluggish slow - lost a lot of speed... that he had to make up for with technique & precision & did.
I say Bravery :good Ps. The stupidity was when he actually signed the contract vs a fabulous elite fighter like Tommy Hearns
Come on this one does not belong there. I love Gatti and WArd but those guys were not top fighters. They were great together but when they would step up they would get beaten. In Morales-Barrera you had the 2 best fighters in the weight class that no one else could beat.
