I'm really getting fed up with HBO. They only seem to enjoy putting on freak shows to maximize profits at the expense of putting on fights that matter.

We all know about HBO's refusal of the Taylor/Froch fight which is bullsh*t because this fight actually matters but i guess since Froch is a no name, it can't be accepted. Or how about them snatching Dawson away from Showtime to ride his gravy train. We all know that as soon as Dawson falters, they will dump him like they did Jermaine Taylor. Now i heard that HBO might've rejected a Williams/Clottey fight.

They just seem to be so caught up with enhancing their fighters and doing everything to milk them at the expense of the well being of the sport.

    Thoughts?

Hbo is about Quantity over quality while Showtime puts quality over quantity. Simple as that.

HBO has turned the corner in my book. 2009 looks to be an excellent year for HBO. Look at their lineup. They have a ton interesting matchups coming up that feature a lot of young talent. They've already Berto vs. Collazo and Mosely vs. Margarito. In February you have Angulo vs. Mayorga, Diaz vs. Marquez, Funeka vs. Campbell, and Cintron vs. Martinez. Don't forget that they have Kirkland vs. Julio and Ortiz vs. Arnoutis in March. Dawson vs. Tarver is a bit dissapointing. However, the rematch would have to happen eventually. I'm sure they'll put Dawson in better matchups in the future. Another good sign, they passed on Cotto vs. Jennings and Pavlik vs. Rubio

I'm excited about what HBO is doing. They seem more focused on putting together intriguing matchups as well as developing young talent.

    Agreed.

It seems like Oscar's decline and Floyd's retirement forced them to refocus on putting together compelling fights with young talent. The economy is also getting them back on the right track with PPVs. You KNOW a year and a half ago Margarito - Mosley would have been shoved down everybody's throats with a $50 price tag. Those days seem to be behind us, for the time being at least.

They are still hurting boxing, but not as much as they were doing.

Ross Greenburg has to go. There was an article in one of our leading boxing magazines highlighting the relationship between GBP & HBO, and how other promoters tend to be sidelined at times......

Granted the mag is anti-GBP at the best of times, but still it was a very balanced read.

Some of the fights they are approving, such as Tarver vs Dawson II - totally pointless I'd say, and others that were ESPN level such as Mosley vs Mayorga was going to be on PPV :patsch

They may have turned a corner, and hopefully so. HBO seem like Sky - they have guys running it that are clueless, whilst Showtime are Setanta.

C'mon, HBO is not hurting boxing.

They may not pick up the best fights all the time but they are still the best...for the most part.

Yeah, have to admit the early 2009 schedule is good. But that's only a short period. I'm still not sold on them for the long haul. Them refusing the Taylor/Froch fight is sickening.

In terms of its impact on the sport, there can be no question HBO is doing some great great things to promote boxing in general to the average person. The 24/7 series is an example of that. Also the ring life series is unparralleled and it blew me away just check it out:

From a fight fans perspective Showtime > HBO, and HBO sometimes broadcasts fights that have no business on the network.

True that really bothers me too. What's with these one ****in fight cards? it's really lame how they show just ONE fight with no undercard. HBO used to be alot better back in the days.

I wish Don King was young again.

imho ppv is whats wrong with boxing. can you imagine a world where the boxing was mainstream like nfl or nhl and big fights where once again on network tv. i mean if rumble in the jungle or thrilla in manilla can be shown worldwide so could any of the fights of today.

Of course they aren't hurting boxing in the grand scheme of things as they are HBO and the main network that shows the biggest fights. But maybe i should've rephrased my question.

Can HBO do more to enhance the sport?

I say yes without a doubt. Don't try so hard to pump up the in-house fighter and ride them only to dump them when they fail. Try to have some more neutrality on what fights they choose. Look, they are the monopoly of the sport in terms of making big fights. They have an obligation to the sport of boxing not to be so darn biased with the fights they so. It makes them look like greedy SOBs with no care for the health of the sport.
