Berto has become one of the unconditional 'darlings' of HBO. Maybe it's an Al Haymon connection. But I couldn't agree more - this fight is lame, and HBO is lame for shelling out this kind of money for it.

He's a big welter, and can punch with the right hand. But he's slow, and limited, so Berto should have a field day. But if theres a just god, Hernandez will land big, and rid us all of this fraudly Haitian.

Just to clear something up, if HBO is offering 1.25 million for the fight then that's the whole pot, it still has to be divided to between the fighters. So Berto isn't receiving a 7-figure check for this, although he will be getting the lionshare. He still has to lay off a percentage to his handlers, his training staff etc. also. That said, he'll probably still be left with about half a million or thereabouts, which is way too much.

You're talking about a barely top-5 contender with a bogus belt who doesn't draw flies to a pile of **** fighting a worthless contender (like he hasn't had enough gimmies yet) who nobody knows outside of really, really hardcore boxing degenerates (for the record, i've heard of the guy, i think he KO'd Corley a while back, but i haven't actually seen him fight). How that is worth a sizeable part of HBO's not-so-sizable-anymore boxing budget is beyond any form of reason.

I think it's obvious that there's a lot of truth to what Steve Kim always says about the behind the scenes influence that Al Haymon has on HBO's boxing programming. Because other Al Haymon-managed fighters, like Paul Williams and Chad Dawson, are putting pretty much the same miserably small amounts of asses in seats and are drawing the same miserable ratings and are all the while getting the same ridiculous pay-checks.

And you can't even hold it against the fighters. If they're getting this kind of money for doing what they're doing, than why should they try to change anything? Would you, boxing fans? For the sake of honor? For some fans on an internet forum? For the overall betterment of the sport?

He will never step up with this kind of pay and level of competition. No need to, thank to HBO!

This is just HBO being stubborn and refusing to give up on the notion that Berto (a guy that they dubbed a long time ago to be the next big thing) is a big draw and the future of the sport. The fact is he hasn't panned out the way they thought he would. However since he still is undefeated, while all the other young fighters they dubbed "the future of boxing" (ie. Ortiz, Dawson, Angulo, Arreola) have all lost, they are backing Berto at all costs. At least he is entertaining to watch.

I wonder how much Al Haymon's take is for Berto, Pavlik and Williams? Where does this guy get his influence from? Is it because he has Mayweather?

For 1.25 mill, we could be watching Golovkin vs N'Jikam. Hopefully Hernandez stops Berto, and Martinez stops Williams, and Mayweather takes an extended break. Choke Haymon out of the picture. Hell I'd rather see Adamek vs Madalone than Berto.
