Roy Jones Jr fights were easy to sell. Wlad Klitschko isn't. So they should pay money to show a fight they have no interest in out of fear that it would "discredit" a sport that does a good enough job discrediting itself? Please man. If Tyson and Ali were around today, they'd be gigantic ratings getters. Wlad isn't. HBO isn't going to pay for a fight that's not going to do well. ...lolwut? There's no Dawson-Johnon III. Berto vs Malignaggi can be purchased for 1/8th the price of Wlad vs Chambers. Stop ignoring the financial ramifications here. I doubt HBO is crying about skipping out on a Wlad fight. Also it's not a boycott. They're just not going to pay for the fight. I doubt Wlad cares at all. He makes his money without HBO. They don't always need to show Klitschko fights.
The Klitschko-Ibragimov farce was a result of Ibragimov refusing to take the fight to Wlad and win or go out on a shield. He was almost leaning his head out of the ring to make it impossible for Wlad to reach him, same way as Byrd did in the first Vitali fight. Ibragimov only wanted to survive 12 rounds, hoping for possibly landing a lucky punch late. Same way as "Kingpin" refused anything remotely looking like an offense, for 99% of the fight.
Why is everybody mentioning the Sultan fight? HBO aired the less significant Thompson and Rahman fights after the fact. This would actually be the first Wlad fight in years that they didn't air..., ironic in that Chambers expects to be one of his most challenging game opponents since Brock and Peters.
Over the top man, but I can't disagree with the spirit of the post. That's pretty much my exact feelings about it. Not being shown on HBO in a heavyweight championship fight isn't going to hurt Wlad much but it's definitely going to hurt Chambers, who could use all the support and exposure he can get. It's not like they haven't backed worse and less significant fights and aired them on their network.
I think instead of ragging on HBO for getting all the big fights they can inside their budget. We should turn towards their competitors and other fight networks for not taking the risk to air this fight.
Stop it with the RJJ ****. The guy fought ONE cop... one. Most of the guys Jones fought were bigger than him and had earned their title shot. With that said, boycotting the fight IS stupid.
Yeah, and maybe after the Rahman and Thompson thrill-fests, they thought enough was enough. How many times should they show a guy who produces consistently boring fights?
