Probably got confused because HBO just showed between rounds a clip of Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Torres as part of their career retrospective, and he most likely was listening to Jim Lampley narrate the clip while awaiting his cue to discuss his scorecard. Incidentally, the name of HBO's longtime Spanish translator and broadcast partner of Lederman & Lampley is actually Ray Torres)

Little to report except that Negrete is occupying the space just inside Vargas' chest a bit more and forcing some inside exchanges, but still landing very little and eating the same amount he was on the outside in the first half. Vargas is cut somewhat badly over the right upper eyelid (from a butt in the 5th), so there's a tiny bit of drama.

 

I think that late flourish was enough for me to give Negrete the seventh.

Negrete's effectiveness improved a great deal in the sixth and seventh (in other words, ever since the cut appeared, with a correlating bump in his volume of punches) but I can't say enough to not call them clear 10-9s for Rey. He's outlanding the Colombian by a significant margin even in these post-cut rounds.

 

80-72 Vargas

Nearly stopped on the cut mid-round.

 

Negrete hasn't won a round yet, but he's not quitting.. he seems to be getting stronger.
