No, they did a countdown simply because it's DLH. Not for Forbes. There will probably be one for his last couple fights as well.

But it's a shame they will only have one for fighters like DLH. Assholes everyone already know of. For this fight, it's an excellent way to drum interest and to give some background on the fighters to fans who don't know them or know much. Judging from what so many say about Margarito here, many could use something like that.

But your wrong, this fight SHOULD be seen by the masses. It has potential to be a barnburner. The more people who see this, the better.

    E.X.A.C.T.L.Y.

Why nobody sees the hidden agenda here is beyond me. HBO is seriously ruining this sport. They did a 180 since the BAD days of the 90s and are just awful with boxing television today.

Thing is, on this forum and for all real fans this is a big fight. For the rest of the world its nothing. Most causal fans couldnt care less about cotto and margo.

At the end of the day, boxing is a business.

But isn't that the point? To try and make casual fans care a little about this fight. My brother and his friends dont care much about boxing, but you can bet that I will make them watch this fight. My girlfriend doesn't care about boxing but she gets excited when there is a countdown show done for a fight. This is why UFC is successful because they know how to promote and advertise their fights.

This fight, with proper advertising and promotion, should do over 300,000 ppv buys and should be able to sell out the MGM.

Makes sense. This fight should be made to create new fans.

But I disagree in one thing: this fight is not the Hagler-Hearns of this decade. Cotto is not in that level yet...and Margarito is a no one compared to 1985 Hagler or Hearns.

A business that is getting reamed by these assholes who have been privileged with the responsibility of keeping the sport alive.

They have a perfect chance to highlight a quality matchup featuring two fighters that never back down. There are no losers in fights like these.

But no, what they'll do is 24/7 the stupid dysfunctional family bull****. And they'll give us WWE style contests to boot.

"Big hype and little substance" - That is HBO's moniker these days. Frankly it disgusts me.

Yes! New fans, means better ratings, it means more PPV buys. Not trying to create new fans is bad business. Not trying to create excitement for a fight that has FOTY potential, is bad business.

Of course it should be, I'm all with you! But ask Bob Arum, the guy after the long speech of 'boxing needs to return to national TV' why is he still doing this one on PPV, even if it will generate only 180-250.000 buys and truly only the hardcore fans will see...

HBO long got out of the business of getting new fans. If you need a true example, here it is. Here's a fight that could/should burn down the house and with these two guys being 1A) and 1B) in contention for Mayweather...you'd think a little bit of hype would be nice for the fans who a) wanna see it or b)who don't know who these guys are and are curious. **** that I guess.

Guess we'll never see Floyd/Cotto then because it's going to be massively underhyped and thus Floyd will be able to forever rest on the laurels of "Cotto doesn't have enough fans/not enough money/etc"

    Good move HBO.

To be honest I would like to see a countdown show between them but it will be a much much much better fight than the countdown show will be. I'm just glad that this fight is happening.

    This is totally unexpected:patsch

Even from a business POV this move does not make any sense at all. Those 24/7 shows are a great tool for reeling in the casual fan and creating a buzz. My guess was that this fight would do about 450-500 buys(with the aid of that show) now I'm not so sure!

That's the perplexing thing, these shows are relatively inexpensive to produce and usually yield a pretty good return on the investment!

This is like putting out a product when you have not intentions of promoting it:think
