I'd agree with you if we were managing Jennings' career and were looking from his perspective (then you could use the similar logic and say that Wlad should fight Briggs because he isn't a threat and brings money).

Jennings is currently rated around top 5 in world. He has an opportunity to fight the absolute champion for the highest recognition and by far the biggest payday of his career. His other choice is to pursue the paper belt against a minor titlist. Not a hard choice to make.

Medium risk/reward vs High risk/reward. Let's see if Jennings has the champion mentality.

 

The money will not look so bad in hindsight if Jennings gets sparked against Wilder or Stiverne for a $250k title shot payday. A $2m guaranteed payday vs. Wlad will then look like the road not taken.

 

In this current field of heavyweights Wlad is not gonna fight any fighter that's considered a real threat. Briggs is not gonna bring any money to the table. He's just another big mouth victim trying to get paid for getting knocked out. For me, it's not about high risk, low risks or getting recognition for getting knocked out. Right now, he is just fodder for Wlad and I don't wanna see him go that way. I want to see him build himself into a disciplined, highly skilled, and mentally hardened heavyweight first. I'm tired of seeing Wlad feast on these fighters that is not ready for his big ass.

I agree with you that Briggs is just a cannon fodder to Wlad and that fight should never happen. I just said that you shouldn't be looking at the things from Jennings' management's point of view. He has 2 options in front of him: 1) the WBC path, which is medium risk/reward and 2) fight Klitschko, which is high risk and high reward. There is no question about which option would the real champion-mentality boxer choose. Let's see which category Jennings belongs in.

Also, it's wrong that Wlad is not going to fight a boxer who is considered a real threat. Taking only recent examples into the consideration, Povetkin was universally recognized as the #1 threat. Also, Pulev was considered the biggest threat ever since Povetkin was defeated (most of the posters here were complaining when Wlad tried to arrange the Stiverne fight instead of giving Pulev a shot).

 

Remember there were rumors of K2 offering a voluntary shot to Seth Mitchell, on more than one occasion. His handlers said "not yet, we're still building him up. We will get a mandatory shot and then make more money". Look how that worked out for them :deal

 

Learn to score a fight. Perez, at best, won half the rounds. He didn't get the draw, however, b/c of his stupid moment of trying to head-butt Jennings. (If Perez felt like he was winning, he wouldn't have tried to pull a Victor Ortiz!)

 

Management point of view, common sense point of view, fighting heart point of view, Jennings would be crazy not to take a multi-million payday for a chance at all those belts and historical fame. Even if he loses but puts on a good show his stature may actually increase. Except for a few weirdos on this website Wlad's stature as an all time great is very high. You could hear the respect in Kellerman's voice after Wlad slaughtered Pulev. Nobody expects much from Jennings so if he hurts or lasts with Wlad he gets respect. He could also win. The guy hits pretty hard and has long arms and is a strong, rugged fighter. Anything can happen in a heavyweight fight. That is why fighters like Holmes and Wlad are given so much respect as long-term champs. Every fight they enter can be ended by a single punch.

 

I don't know what the money looks like but I don't see 2m for a Wlad fight. Maybe a mil. What I do know is that the odds of winning against Wlad is slim and none. He has a legitimate chance against Wilder and Stiverne and if he can win there then he is on his way to make some really good money. Fighting Wlad is like cashing out and I think that he's better than that.

 

Jennings ain't ready. He needs a bit more seasoning.

I'm not saying Wlad won't fight anybody because he will. What I'm saying that regardless of where they rank, there is no heavy weight out there at this point that can give Wlad the fight or fights he needs to truly step into that ATG ranking. I don't see him losing a fight right now.
