Ridiculous. $150k is peanuts, and there's no way they'd be losing money on that. Heck, for $300k, you could still have it as a B-side to a more "fan friendly" fighter's A-side. For HBO, why not just pair it up with another one of their bargains- GGG. The dude delivers A-side ratings for B-side money. You won't get much more bang for your buck than headlining with Golovkin and putting Gonzo-Estrada on the undercard.
Maybe Gonzalez could fight Ruenroeng, and then rematch Estrada for the WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO titles, with the winner becoming the Undisputed Flyweight Champion.
I've always wondered how much hem-and-haw backpedaling the people who tell me I should take Lampley's spot would do if they actually heard my voice. :think
i disagree. if we are talking about revenue, the casuals are the only fans that matter. if your fan base was limited to hard core boxing fans(nerds) and boxing forum members, then all fights would be on fsn. everyone i know, knows that im a huge fight fan so boxing is a common topic of conversation with me, none of them know who either fighter is, who theyve fought or why they should care. you want hbo to gamble on future returns when they can easily invest that money on proven commodities, unless they run out of those commodities, it doesnt make business sense. im not saying i like the situation, but i understand it and cant blame hbo for doing business that way.
They deserve to be paid more than that. Especially since HBO used to pay Haymon's bums like Andre Berto 1 to 2 million dollars for a fight.
HBO wouldn't pay $150k for this when Chocolatito was undefeated and in his prime, but DAZN paid 200k for the Yafai match, after he was considered all washed up and largely written off due to losses, age, injuries, and inactivity. I loved HBO and will never drink on the DAZN kool-aid but goddamn it. Some of their decision making in their last few years of existence makes it so you can't help but think HBO Boxing inadvertently dug their own grave.
Eventually this is what killed HBO paying guys like Berto this kind of money but being frugal for fan friendly fighters..
