You guys are all over the map; crying about Berto being overpaid, Dzin being overpaid, crying about Bradley-Alexander after begging for the fight for a year, and now are on to crying about Donaire being underpaid. Maybe HBO should stop making fights since they can do no right.

If HBO wants good fights, they shouldn't match up 2 American slick blacks ever again, otherwise you just get a bunch of slapping and crying. The final product doesn't resemble anything like a "fight".

The thing is a lot of the public was interested in Berto-Cotto and Martinez-Cotto. HBO tried to make both the fights, but Arum turned them down and tried to sell them instead on an uncompetitive tune-up for Cotto. HBO then sided with Martinez, who is clearly a hotter fighter when both he and Cotto ended up with fights on the same day. The Dzinziruk thing comes in because there are no real names at middleweight and he was perceived as likely to be far more competitive than DiBella's preference of Lee or Zbik. I'd also note that lots of boxing fans wanted the two to fight when Martinez was at 154; I'm not sure how big of a number it is, but then again, I'm not sure how many people in the US care about the bantamweight division.

 

Good post but expect it to be ignored by the Arum loving, black people hating posters populating this thread.

People bitching about Berto yet he signed to fight Mosley before being paid to step aside and also put forth the cheapest offer to fight Pacquiao before Arum/Pac decided to fight the lesser threat in Shane instead.

If Arum matched his top fighters against other top fighters then there would be no problem with HBO.

Good points, but I am not saying Arum is a saint. He is definitely not trustworthy, but the thing he does best is promoting. I as well could point out fights that promoters have brought to HBO only to be turned down. The thing is, it was a bit foolish of HBO to turn down a Cotto fight. Cotto had the highest rating of the year with his fight against Foreman, while Martinez did have a spectacular KO of Williams, he did not have an opponent or a venue yet and many doubt that he can attract the draw Cotto currently has. Lee had the fan base and a decent winning streak, though against sub par opposition. Zbik was Martinez' mandatory and IMO, deserved the fight more than anybody else. You are right in saying the middleweight division has no names, Zbik was the rightful challenger of Martinez though. I also understand that typically the lower weight classes have less of an attraction than the higher weight classes, but typically they produce better fights. That is just the fight fans' ignorance. This fight on Saturday and the Bantamweight tournament could prove to dispell the bad aroma the lower weight categories seem to get.

I don't understand where you are getting this angst from. I am being as objective as possible. My agenda does not include anything but the bad decisions HBO makes. A network that is supposed to be showing us the best fights possible, denying the bad fights promoters try to slide through the cracks, and being the voice of reason for us, the fans.

Why give credit to Berto for finally fighting a live opponent since Collazo? Berto against Pacquiao would be a great fight, but like I said before my purpose of this discussion is HBO, not Arum who is no saint. Pacquiao's resume is fantastic. He's been matched against top fighters almost his whole career. You clearly have an agenda for a certain fighter.
