Williams vs. Phillips at 154 instead.

    From Dan Rafael's ESPN's notebook...

    • Welterweight Delvin Rodriguez (23-2-1, 14 KOs) heads to Johannesburg, South Africa, to face Isaac Hlatshwayo (28-1, 10 KOs) on Nov. 17 in an eliminator -- with a shot at beltholder Joshua Clottey at stake -- Rodriguez manager Stan Hoffman told ESPN.com. Hoffman said they signed for the fight this week after talks for a Nov. 29 challenge of welterweight titlist Paul Williams broke off. HBO would not approve the match. Hoffman, of course, has fond memories of South Africa. He co-managed Hasim Rahman when he knocked out Lennox Lewis in a major upset to win the heavyweight championship there.

    • With Rodriguez out as an opponent for Williams, junior middleweight titleholder Verno Phillips is back in the picture as Williams' likely opponent in the headline bout on HBO's Nov. 29 "Boxing After Dark" card. However, it is uncertain whether Williams will face Phillips for his 154-pound belt. If the fight happens, it could be a nontitle fight -- and Phillips likely would relinquish his belt -- if the IBF does not approve the match.

And from Don Steinberg's Pavlik-Hopkins blog on ESPN.com...

    Friday, 1:30 p.m. ET -- Williams-Phillips for November?

Sources here tell me HBO has lined up a Boxing After Dark show for Nov. 29: Paul Williams against Verno Phillips at 154 pounds. Phillips took the IBF 154-pound strap from Cory Spinks in March, while Williams seems to have outgrown 147-pounds permanently. -- Don Steinberg

I think either fight is crap for a fighter at PW's career development. He just fought a nobody at MW, and now wants to fight Rodriquez or Phillips? I like Verno, but come on. PW is at a whole different level at this point.

He has went up to 160 and even beat Margarito, the dude is what people say "we need in boxing" yet they joust him for his selection of Verno Phillips? A man who is still a threat to anyone? People are funny.

Verno Phillips is no longer a threat to anyone significant. His decision over Spinks was a DKP decision, if Spinks fought his type of fight instead of trying to please the fans it would have been a shut-out.

The best memory I have of him is knocking down Quartey with over a minute left in the round, then making no attempt to finish him.

Williams will murder him. It should be illegal for me to bet on it.

I'm not gonna pretend that I know about all the behind the scenes politics that has been going on with all of PTP's rumored matches but it seems to me like nobody is in a rush to fight him. And I can understand why being that he's tall, with a ridiculous reach, has a high work rate, has tremendous power, but has yet to solidify himself as a big time draw. So in other words he presents a high risk minimal reward fight. I personally believe he's doing his part to try and secure good fights but his rumored oppositions are ones who haven't been willing to step up to the plate.

It's Boxing After Dark, not World Championship Boxing. Get it through your thick ****ing skulls people. The budget for the entire card is under $1 million. No way they can afford to get any big names to fight PW under that budget. They'll be lucky if they can get a beltholder like Phillips. Wait until February or March, and PW should be able to line up a bigger fight, but the money just isn't there for a big money fight right now. At least he's staying active.

Beenie, you must realize that the people hating on Williams have an agenda. The'yre Margo fans that are pissed that their boy is getting called out for fighting washed up old men instead of taking $4 mill to fight Williams. Williams is fighting on Boxing After Dark. There is no money in the budget for a big name. A 154 lb. titlest is pretty good for a Boxing After Dark card.

Pavlik said himself in an interview that he chose to fight Hopkins instead of Williams. He said he would get no credit for beating a Welter. There is no money for a unification bout on Boxing After Dark against Clottey.

well of course, santos is a risk for any 154 at the moment. but what i meant was for the time being. santos is like a bigger version of an indio quintana, with alittle more pop. to be honest i think he's the best fighter from 154 on down. he does have a shaky chin but so do alot of good fighters. on his best night i think he can beat williams. santos knows how to move alot when in trouble but he'll go toe to toe too
