George Foreman was a terrible commentator. Hopkins-Trinidad was some of the worst commentary ive ever heard, also Barrera-Hamed was also an embarrassment to listen to. I never felt that I was getting a worthwhile insight when he was commentating. Id far arther have Nazim Richardson or Roy Jones
No... not Foreman, not Jones. HBO should get Daniel Edouard. Well spoken, insightful, not overly emotional. If you want to hear his announcing.... check the Roy Jones/Lacy fight. He was the co-announcer.
Either way, cuz of political correctness and bullcrap, HBO will have to give the 3rd man job to either a Black, Spanish or Asian guy to satisfy the biased viewers of American TV........ That is ONE reason why pro's like Al Bernstein will never work for HBO........ Their is NO room for Bernstein there............ Not while Jimmy Lamps and Lawrence Merchant are still hanging on to the HBO network.......... Also, don't forget Mad Max Kellerman, either.......... Personally, I'd like to see Ray Leonard back on HBO............... Leonard was fired in 1991 after he sold his ill fight with Terry Norris to Showtime for an extra $100,000 dollars.......... Yes, Leonard was greedy there............... Leonard later said that he was gonna leave HBO in 1991 anyway, so he didn't care about being fired at the time............. Leonard grossed 7 million for losing to Norris on Showtime.......... MR.BILL
Well written article...there's only one problem. Foreman was a terrible commentator who was biased, and said some of the silliest **** I've ever heard. Roy Jones Jr was absolutely terrific next to Lampley and Merchant, I want to see Superman back in the booth. As a side note, I actually have no problem with commentators being biased...to an extent. If it gets to full on man love like Jim Watt then I'll have to mute the television, but these guys are Boxing fans...how could they not be biased one way or the other? Lampley was clearly choked up after watching Cotto take a beating by Margarito...I like to see that.
If anything, they should sack Merchant. The guy is a self-serving moron who spreads his bias like a sickly weed.
Merchant is 78 and on his way out the door......... As it is, he only shows up for certain cards these nights............ Jim Lampley is only age 61 here in 2010, but he's been with HBO since 1989....... His rap is growing stale......... HBO is aware of that.......... The future of HBO boxing lies between Bob Papa and Max Kellerman......... The 3rd man will always be short-termed......... Plus, not white......... MR.BILL
Just because Merchant has been there for a long time doesn't justify his foaming at the mouth with an embarrassing level of bias. I wouldn't mind his metaphors and longwinded explanations if he didn't inject his agenda into everything he says.
Foreman was out in left field alot of the time,,, but to say an olympic gold medalist and former undisputed HW champion has "ZERO INSIGHT INTO BOXING" is surely one of the most idiotic statements ever written on ESB... and that's saying something! I suppose you think you know more about boxing do ya? :blood :-(
Why, so George could tell us how "the referee is the most important man in the ring, other than the fighters"?
Hey...if you're not a fan of Larry that's fine Marnoff, but we're talking about Foreman here, Foreman the commentator, and he couldn't carry Merchant's jockstrap.
I, for one, wish it was Foreman. I always enjoyed hearing his comments during fights. I do not think this will ever happen, but I would be pretty happy if it did.
I agree... I used to like Lamps, but I think he's losing it. That bang, bang, bang!!! bull**** was just about the final straw for me. atsch
