With all the problems this card had, we should have known we were in for a bad night of boxing. And that is exactly what we got. Rivera was way overmatched, as expected, Martinez was robbed 4 or 5 times in a single fight by everyone associated with the fight, and then Campbell looks awful, and in my opinion, drew with Funeka. We were literally one knockdown in the 11th round from having 3 titles in one of our best divisions going home with someone who has fought outside of South Africa once and is barely known, even in boxing circles. I mean, I love boxing, but sometimes I sit back and wonder. Tonight was one of those nights.
It is a shame all those titles are up in the air after such a close fight. Didn't score tonight but I will tomorrow and Funeka won almost every round from the 3rd to the 10th. The last round was close too.
The amazing thing to me is that if even if Funeka doesn't get knocked down that second time, he still would have lost. If that's a 10-9 Campbell round, Funeka loses. Nate looked awful from the third round on, save one minute stretch of the 11 round. Just a disappointing night.
This was a very decent NIGHT of boxing. We seldom get a card. Tonight we got a decent card without any great fights.
Yeah, the Campbell-Funeka fight was decent, I guess, but even with a decent fight, it's still a questionable outcome. And the Cintron-Martinez fight was just tough to watch, and then it became an awful fight with that decision.
Boxing has definetly changed a lot since the old days and so it should but my thoughts on tonight were that Im sick of seeing guys just beat up on guys like in the Rivera fight. It's not really worth watching again because its a one sided beatdown. But I understand the late replacement situation. Cintron and Martinez, just did not want to mix it up at 1st, there were 1 or 2 good moments in the fight but thats one of those fights that you will only watch live and never watch again. Nothing captivating about it and in m opinion, I dont even want to see Cintron fight again, hes boring, it was similar to his fight with Ndou, boring. martinez, Im not sold on him at all, another HBO Hype Job, he can fight but he is another hype job, Nate Campbell just gassed out but in the early stages he looked dangerous, but gassed out as the fight went on, Funeka boxed well but I doubt anyone would want to see him as a main event again but the kidd did put up a good fight so hats off to him, I think that fight could have gone in the favour of Funeka but again, its all HBO behind these close decisions. Even before they announced the verdict I knew they would never give to an unknown south african fighter. I agree with the original post, we need real ****ing fight cards, the best fight of the night was the main event but even that was not enough to keep me from dozing off half way through it.
The suits at HBO are probably reanalyzing their boxing budget for the rest of 2009 as we speak. Nothing was gained by that card.
HBO like to pick and choose who gets shown on their station but the way I see it, we might aswell be watching WWE because everytime some HBO fighter has one dcent performance he is then promoted like the next Muhammad Ali or something, its all hype to sell fighters in future fights and to make themselves money. When I look at most of the match ups nowadays its like boxing has gone limp. All we ever seem to see is total undercard mismatches and one sided beatdowns. **** protecting records and put fighters into real fights. I might aswell watch Cheerleading if everytime I put on a fight to see a one sided Mayweather vs Gatti type style of fight. Im tired of these types of mismatches. I think Showtime got it right with Vasquez vs Marquez, that was 2 evenly matched fighters really fighting, nothing one sided about those fights. Angulo is another ****ing hype job, put him in there with a boxer who will move around like Paul Williams and he'll get outboxed and probably stopped in the late rounds. Too Many ****ing Hype Jobs. That is why people on here **** up their pre fight predictions because the hype misleads you. Put Juan Manuel Lopez in with someone who bangs as hard as he does and who is equal skillwise with him and then lets see what happens, no more fighting bums anymore and that goes for so many fighters who are borderline now. Just to point out the mismatch was the Angulo fight, the other 2 were evenly thought contests but slightly disappointing at some points.
A little known boxer from Namibia would certainly disagree... THE NEW WBA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION, Paulus Moses! :yep Since Funeka did not win tonight, "regular champ" Moses automatically gets the full title.
I liked the card, personally. Could the second fight gone the way it should have gone? (Martinez KO 7 Cintron) Yes. But overall, not a bad night. The De La Hoya/Pac undercard was bad.
i agree it shouldve been canceled. the way it was originally planned was great angulo vs mayorga martinez vs santos or whoever it was funeka vs a non weight drained campbell i just hope to god next months triple header doesnt hav any late changes cause this one looks solid
