I know its stereotypical and a throwback to the 80's, but there is a reason why the character of Ivan Drago is well liked by most fans. There is an ambience or a feel to that era during the rivalry between the US and Russia. It permeated everything from GI Joes to action films causing alot of people to look back bizarrely, with a slight sense of nostalgia for the time.
HBO should play that up now, many Americans still feel that way deep down, a fear and a respect at the same time. GGG and Kovalev are being marketed as sweet nice guys which they are unfortunately, even though their actions in the ring speaks volumes in them getting over with the fans, if they were sold as big scary Red Monsters I think that would appeal to many casual fans even more than the way they are being sold now.
Big scary intros would go a long way as well.
Imagine how badass it would be seeing Kovalev come out cloaked in red and yellow light to a song like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG3jQZv7jQI
Hang in there for the chorus and then the bridge at 3:45.

Or GGG coming out to this:

I think it would be quite effective.:D
Don't take this thread too seriously, have a little bit of a sense of humor.:good

The mass appeal of Golovkin is that he is a Kazakh good boy, it would be difficult to cast him as a villain.

    Kovalev on the other hand...

no the whole usa vs russia thing is played out.the cold war was nothing more than propaganda intended to keep the populations of both countries scared they were never actually going to war there is a little thing called MAD.as for marketing ggg and kovalev as soviet killing machines ggg is half russian and from kazakhstan and kovalev lives in florida so it would be weird.

I'm well versed in the history of the Cold War, CIA funded coups all that ****. Most Americans don't know that much, they bought into it hook line and sinker, and many still have those feelings. Kazahkstan was part of the Soviet Union, and Kovalev barely speaks English its not a stretch.

Isn't Rammstein a German band? Germans and Soviets get along?!

Yeah I'm with you. No one cares about that rivalry or whatever you want to call it anymore. Anyone that does or has some affinity towards the eastern block is probably already a fan.

They're East German born and left wing communist sympathizers. They are very inspired by orchestral and nationalistic military music German and Russian.

I see. It's just not the same full blown Soviet effect as Drago's entrance vs Rocky IMO... Rammstein isn't necessarily mainstream depending on where you live, and people might just go 'wtf is this ****'.

Kovalev is actually a nice guy (outside of the ring). He's just got a vicious streak in him and he doesn't take too kindly to people disrespecting him or booing his national anthem. lol

Yeah I know but they still sound pretty damn intimidating. Most white people like me say wtf is this **** about most rap music, but that doesn't stop black fighters from using them.
