Rigo turns Lions into kittens. Mares and LSC could be entertaining, or they could get tired of hitting air and getting countered to hell (like the rest of Rigo's opponents) and become gun shy. Long story short: Entertaining fighters dont always make for entertaining fights I'm a HUGE Rigo fan. This is bull**** from a BOXING fan POV, but understandable.
His management are purely Cuban, so they feel Rigondeaux is doing perfect. They get offended by the demand for more action...as they feel it makes Rigondeaux look bad
Perfect amateur fighter but as a pro? Damn, not even a single ounce of charisma to make up for the lack of action.
Once Lomachenko knocks out Salido and wins his title, they will probably show Lomanchenko Vs Rigo. I think Lomanchenko will make Rigo fight for once........
I know this, I saw his interview on HBO before the Agbeko fight. They have to understand that pro boxing is different. They have to realize that you could be an exciting fighter while having a responsible defense. Mikey Garcia comes to mind, he rarely trades blindly, is always doing his best to not receive punishment, yet he has one of the highest KO ratios in boxing. With Rigos speed and power he could pull this off better than Mikey.
The way Rigondeaux wants it, he has to move down to 112, that way his range, chin, size & power improve...he walks in the ring 124 so its easy. Super fight with Roman Gonzalez for starters will be legacy caliber :boxer
First off... I think Rigo is taking too much blame. Blame Top Rank for bad matching, blame Top Rank for putting him on after Kirkland in front of a local crowd who packed in mostly for Kirklands opposition. Blame his opponent for basically doing nothing but surviving for 12 rounds. On paper it should have been a better matchup, but still its a supposedly "elite" promoters job to figure some things out ahead of time. Yeah, its partially Rigo fault as well. He says it makes no sense to fight different.. and take risk. From the POV of winning the match he is right, from the POV of making money its obviously wrong. The thing he doesnt get though, is you dont even have to KO the guy. Just make it exciting, and interesting. It can be a chess match, but at least try and project some of that chess match in a way the viewer can understand without a 52" HDTV, a great eye for boxing, and attention to subtle foot hand and facial movement. If Arum had the sense God gave a horse, he would be putting Rigo on some non-premium cable a few times in front of a bunch of Cubans with a few aggressive cans just to build some audience while they figured out who in the weight range is good enough to actually make an HBO fight worth watching. Because Rigo is just like FMJ and Ward, in that they can be great fighters to watch... against the right opponent.
Golden Boy needs to go after Rigo aggressively...and they can probably get him on the cheap too. They've got tons of quality fighter's at 122/126. If set up/promoted properly, Rigondeaux-Santa Cruz and/or Rigondeaux-Mares could be PPV undercard material.
Agree I think in his last fight, Agbeko almost set a new record for lack of punches thrown. It hardly makes for exciting stuff when they other guy is a pure boxer/counter puncher like Rigo. I consider myself to be a massive fan of boxing in general; enjoy watching the more "purist" fights because I can appreciate proper boxing technique etc, but I even I found Rigo vs Agbeko hard to watch and came close to just turning it off. Did you see the amount of empty seats so close to the ring!?!? Rigo needs a few highlight reel KO's. Throw him in with some lightweight Rios's,/Provodnikov's and get the whole community interested again. That or he's just going to fade into the background of the sport which, would be a travesty given how immense he really is.
A shame. I didn't think Donaire at that time could be owned so hard, but Rigo did it. I suspect this might lead to him taking low ball money for big overseas fights like Carl Frampton, Kiko Martinez, or Anselmo Moreno? Hopefully. His career just could turn out better without HBO dictating his activity, opponent name, American ratings, etc.
