HBO will only approve Wlad/Haye for July 11, not interested in Chagaev as replacement

    Klitschko-Chagaev near deal

    http://www.ringtv.com/blog/743/klitschkochagaev_near_deal/

Wladimir Klitschko’s manager told a reporter from the UK that the Ukrainian heavyweight almost certainly will face Ruslan Chagaev on June 20, the same date he was supposed to fight David Haye.

The venue also remains the same, a 60,000 soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Haye pulled out of the fight on Wednesday with a back injury. Chagaev, the WBA’s “champion in recess,” was scheduled to fight Nikolai Valuev last Saturday in Finland but was shown to have a hepatitis B antigen in his system and was not allowed to fight.

Klitschko holds the IBF and WBO belts.

“It is almost 100 per cent certain that Wladimir Klitschko will go ahead with a defense of his three world titles on the same date as he would have faced David Haye,” Bernd Bönte told Telegraph Sport. “… Obviously we are still talking money with Chagaev and there are details to sort with the WBA but we are looking to go ahead with it if it can be all be signed up.”

Haye had asked Klitschko to postpone the fight – rather than replace him – but Klitschko believed that was too risky.

“If David Haye could guarantee that he would be fit for July 11,” Bönte said, “then we would probably have gone ahead and re-scheduled, but there is no guarantee and this is the worry – that it could happen again.”

“If the injury did recur, and there is no guarantee that it would not, it would leave Wladimir in a difficult situation, because if he then had to cancel again, it would mean … he would not have made a defense of his title for nine months.”

Bönte added that Klitschko could fight Haye next year.

This should be rescheduled, most certainly.

The way to do it is have Povetkin on standby, if the guy is ready to fight now, he will be ready in two months time, and he gets his fight soon anyway. Sure, its not commonplace to ask a fighter to train toward a fight he probably wont participate in, but firstly, he must be in ok shape now, secondly, he will be starting to think to his September date anyway, and thirdly, he will get his fight amongst a huge crowd and venue. Maybe throw a little more kitty into the equation, but whatever the complications, they should just give a chance for this massive fight to happen as planned. Very worst comes to the worst, fight Povetkin now, but arrange for Haye to get Povetkin's date in September. Anything less than that will be unnaceptable from K2.

Everybody needs this fight to happen, Boxing, Wlad, Haye, TV, everyone. It is far too significant to let it just fly past, if HBO and Haye are willing to do July 11th, then Wlads team should just take the risk, and possibly thrash out a deal with Povetkin, or another insurance opponent who is willing to take the fight - Chag and Povetkin are apparently willing to take it right now, so surely they will be able to take it five weeks away.

Even if its a shitty stand in opponent that HBO wont go with, all Wlads team will have lost is three weeks, nothing at all. They stand to gain so much more than what they will lose here, which is a absolute megafight and a career definer for Wlad. Refusing to delay this for just 3 weeks with nothing more than that to lose, would be a ***** move, admit it.

No, what difference does all this Ring Magazine bull**** mean in a HW division where the 2 recognised best are brothers who will not fight each other under any circumstances.

Plus that whole WBA mess still has to be resolved between Valuev & Chagaev before we can go announcing anyone the WBA champ. If Wlad beat Chag, which he no doubt would, that would still leave Valuev, Haye & Vitali out there and The Ring are gonna name him their champ?

Plus that leaves all belts in the hands of the brothers who will just continue to hold them hostage till they're stripped.

The fans want to see Wlad v Haye, maybe the Klit nuthuggers dont but who cares what they want.

    So. To summarize.

Haye has more pull than the champ Wlad.
    Ouch

Not bad for a blown up CW who has done nothing at HW & doesn't deserve a shot.

And I wish you Klitites would stop being such smug gleeful *******s about this fight possibly falling through. Being smug about Haye missing his chance etc because you dont like him, and hoping Wlad walks away to spite him on his and your behalfs is just pathetic.

If Wlad had got injured I would be devastated. You forget that this will be Wlads biggest fight to date, and a potential career definer that he badly needs.

If you are genuinely feeling anything other than gutted that this is falling through, then you are not proper boxing fans and need to **** off. This is probably the biggest fight so far this year and the biggest HW fight for the best part of the decade. Hardly a wonder that this sport is where it is with 'fans' like you.

How is Bitchschko vs Ruslan Bumaev a unifcation. Is Vagimir looking to add Chagaev's 'WBA Champion In Recess' title to his collection of fraud titles?

If you look around you will see I have been critical of Wladimir on several occassions, so I am pretty sure I am not a fan boy. As a boxing fan I like a fight between Wladimir and Chagaev more than one between Wladimir and Haye. No offense to Haye, but he didn't earn his shot, he talked himself into it, and now that he is injured Wladimir is in no way obligated to fight him.

Yes Haye was the cruiserweight champion, but that is just it, he was cruiser champ, he hasn't proven anything at heavy. Chagaev is the WBA champion, forget all the mess, he beat Valuev for the title and hasn't lost since. Chagaev is undefeated, he has a belt, for those that care about the Ring this is for the Ring belt, he has wins over Virchis, Ruiz, Valuev and Skelton, which is a better resume than Haye's. Simply put it is a more meaningful fight against a better opponent. Chagaev has shown stamina, a chin, defensive skill, power and mobility.

As a true fan of the sport, I have to say that Chagaev is a more interesting matchup than Haye. Don't get me wrong, I think the Haye-Wlad fight would have been good for the sport to get some mainstream exposure to the HW division for the first time since Lennox retired, but from a sporting sense I think Chagaev brings more to the table than Haye.

I would love to watch either fight. We could easily see Chagaev pull the upset considering he is complete different in style compared to what Wlad has been training for.
