HBO would back Joe vs BHOP, or Dawson in his final fight on british soil...

According to an exclusive interview and report out by Michael Pearlman published by the South Wales Argus, Television giant HBO is giving full backing for a farewell fight for Joe Calzaghe at the Millennium Stadium (UK).

HBO's Senior Vice President Kerry Davis tells the South Wales Argus that a Calzaghe finale with either Chad Dawson or Bernard Hopkins on British soil, would get full backing from HBO.

In regards to backing Calzaghe's fight at Millennium Stadium, Davis tells the Argus: “I think absolutely we would be at the Millennium Stadium if Joe decided to fight again.” Davis went on to add that the ball is in Calzaghe's court, stating: “However, it’s all down to Joe. If he wants to go back to Wales for another fight, we will go with big smiles and open arms.”

Although HBO is ready and willing to back Calzaghe in a finale, there is no word yet or indication to whether or not Calzaghe will continue with boxing or hang up the gloves and retire.

What are the chances of a Calzaghe-Dawson happening now? With HBO backing it up, Gary Shaw could provide Calzaghe with the money he wants (which is probably $5 million dollars are more).

Personally, I'd prefer watching the Hopkins rematch.

I'd rather see the Hopkins rematch.

Dawson is a nobody to the average fan. The Hopkins-Calzaghe II PPV would be pretty good Imo.

And that was probably Calzaghe's closest fight.

Why would anyone want to watch Calzaghe/Hopkins II? It was a dreadful fight with an inevitable result. Is Hopkins somehow going to magically change at this stage?

The good news is that Calzaghe seems to have no interest in fighting him at all. I hope he'll fight Dawson, but chances are he'll retire.

Very well said...i think the only two fights out there for him are Dawson or Johnson. I really think Joe will retire though.

No offense. But, Calzaghe/Hopkins 1 was a dreadful fight to watch. I rather watch Calzaghe vs Dawson.

I'd be willing to bet Calzaghe doesn't end up making much more than $5M off the Jones fight. They each get half of the profit but cover half of expenses. The Garden itself was filled mostly with folks who bought steeply discounted tickets at the last minute. I wouldn't be surprised if the PPV did less than 300,000 buys. And then, don't forget, they still need to pay for the cost of renting out MSG, which is a cool $5M or so right there, not counting all of the other expenses. Other than the 24/7 and the commentators, HBO didn't contribute anything to this fight, so it's not like they're getting much TV revenue outside of whatever they got for the UK broadcast rights.

Joe himself did a shitty job of promoting the fight, and it's going to hurt his wallet. Someone else pays him what he made promoting his own fight and he doesn't even need to concern himself with promoting anything, then that sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

It's a must happen for Calzaghe's legacy - if he wants one. Agreed.

How in the world is a Hopkins rematch a must for his legacy? How much can his legacy be enhanced by beating Hopkins in another boring fight?

You really don't know?? Lots of people out there think he lost to Hopkins. On top of that Calzaghe's biggest claim to fames have been limited types like Lacy and Kessler, and an invalid Roy Jones. Add the percieved Hopkins loss to that mix and you have a very suspect 'heart of the order.' He has a chance to rectify the Hopkins fiasco, there's nothing he can or needs to do more with Lacy, Kessler, and Jones. Current entertainment value has no bearing on what it will say on Calzaghe's tombstone.

It's still a "W" and history will see it as that. My point is that winning another hotly contested and boring fight won't help his legacy. He's not going to dominate Hopkins. No one does. So why fight him again when you already have the "W"?

To truly enhance his legacy, he should fight Dawson. But it's not happening.
