You don't need to for a sport like boxing, normal levels are more than enough for the aerobic component of boxing. For a pure endurance athlete like a tour de france cyclist it's going to make a far bigger difference on performance. The higher your RBC the greater the viscosity (thickness) of your blood meaning the greater risk for heart problems/stroke. High altitude does stimulate higher RBC levels but there is no use in doing that if the quality (intensity) of your training is affected, the problems outweigh the benefits. That's where the train low-sleep high thing came in, the best of both worlds. The longer you do that for the greater the benefits and the longer they last at sea level. The benefits in RBC do drop off relatively quickly at sea level, it is a short boost. If you're competing at high altitude in an endurance event then you should be training at high altitude to acclimatise. Endurance athletes who are born and train at high altitudes for years seem to have those benefits more or less permanently when competing at sea level. Doing it for a couple of months isn't going to do anything, training in hypoxic conditions every now and then like Donaire is doing is going to do absolutely nothing. And if he did do it a lot he would lose strength and high intensity endurance. Boxing isn't the sport for it even if you're doing it right (Donaire isn't).

The evidence so far shows that train high live low would make no difference to an athlete in Donaires position, even in a sport where it would be more appropriate there's nothing to suggest it helps. I'm not saying it's a scam, I'm saying that Conte who's never been to school is acting like he's a professional in a field and prescribing things that have no scientific evidence behind them.
