I'm not going to get into contractual machinations because to be quite honest I find the subject very tedious indeed, but from what you say Maidana wanting $1m from a $2m pot is way over the top. Maidana isn't a bigger name than Khan in the US, to be honest neither of them are known outside of boxing circles over there. I can understand why Khans team would be non-plussed by Maidanas requirements as I can't think of one other belt holder who would take a 50-50 purse split with a challenger of Maidanas unproven pedigree....certainly against another beltholder like Bradley or Alexander, or a challenger of JMMs quality, but not Maidana. Why would Maidana try to price himself out of the fight?
Well remember that according the sanctioning body Maidana is also champion, albeit the Interim. Also I disagree that Maidana is no bigger than Khan simply because Maidana has had more stateside coverage
If you believe the sources then Khan is on $1m+ a fight while Maidana has been getting $350,000 a fight.
That doesnt make him more known over here in the states. To this day the 2nd highest HBO boxing telecast has been the Malinaggi-Khan fight with 1.2 million viewers. Compare that to the only 700,000 that watched Maidana-Cayo one of the worst rating telecast for HBO boxing even for a B.A.D fight.
Yeah and thats probably accurate, but only because of GBP's bizarre decision to give Khan a gaurantee of those sum. Otherwise it would of been like Frank Warren predicted in which he would be fighting for sums of 100-150k, which proved incorrect due to the minimum guarantee
Calling Maidana a champion because he is interim is a pretty long shot to be honest, i've never heard that argument before...still have to disagree about who is the bigger name. As for where the fight will be held, I think talking about a UK date is pretty moot. Whether or not Khan wants it over here I doubt that Maidana would travel (just a feeling). I'm still wondering why Marcos is pricing himself out of the fight when as Gaz points out he has been taking purses of $350k and knowing full well that Khan rightly so will not take a 50/50 split (i've never seen a mando take a 50/50 in any fight)
Yeah but I meant it from his perspective, as in I think he believes himself the co-champion, thats how its probably been bullshitted to him from the sanctioning body et al when people like Salita get made mandatory to Khan when he was sit as the interim. In the management of Maidana I wouldn't be surprised if they think of this as a unification, and who's the blame them with the situation with these belts being so messed up. I think Maidana said he would come to the UK, you can probably find the qoute by looking in the news articles after the Corley fight.
GBP should have a word with someone from the WBA and tell them to force Maidana as the mandatory and he'll have settle to for 25% if he wants the fight. If the $1.7 Million offer from HBO is correct, that'll put him $425,000 and Khan will makes his alleged guaranteed $1.2 Million.
How is Maidana a bigger name in the States? Maidana v Cayo was on HBO Boxing After Dark and got one of their lowest ever ratings. Khan v Malignaggi was on HBO World Championship Boxing and got their highest rating in nearly a year. Well yeah. Why on Earth would a tv company get a cut of the PPV revenue earned by a different tv company in another country? :?
Salita was the mandatory contender before Khan was champion and well before Maidana won the interim title....
Khan cant sell out the MEN at a normal time nevermind at 3 in the morning he got booed out of his last two ppv fights and riots were at the salita fight it was so bad,
**** those yanks. How many times must we watch late fights. If the fight has to be later then something like 1 won't be too bad.
