I wonder if it was because no home-grown fighters were involved? Anyway, one lousy question each from Larry (should be considering retirement) and then Jim Lampley has the cheek to blame Khan for the crowd booing at the end because according to Jim, he spent the last 3 rounds 'running-away'. Sorry Jim, the crowd were booing Merchant's shitty post fight interviews!! Anybody else notice feel it was strange the way HBO wrapped things up at the end after a possible FOTY candidate?
Yes I agree he ****ed up on that interview, also with katsidis it was very harsh. The martinez williams fight was also stupid as hell, acting like williams was winning or soemthing, and then showing him the ko in the post fight interview, good way to take the guys soul. The whole team needs a make over in my opinion, only roy jones can stay, he is very good at commentating.
The commentary was bad too. Lampley is hit and miss, he can be great at times and awful at times. He was awful this night with his cheerleading and blindness. Really, if you're like 10 feet away from the action, is it THAT hard to call the fight accurately? I understand an occasional wrong call, but he constantly made a fuss over "big" shots that really missed.
Was laughing a bit when Maidana just turned his back to Merchant after quickly answering his question.
Oh and yes if I remember correctly Lampley seemed more interested in promoting Bradley/Alexander than doing useful commenting for Maidana/Khan.
I thought Roy did a pretty good job actually. I remember in the 10th after Khan was virtually out on his feet being pummelled by Maidana, Roy saying 'He's been too brave, too brave'.....
Roy was good, as usual. Lampley was saying that Khan was fighting it out in the 10th and showing too much heart, but Khan was doing the right thing. He wasn't even throwing punches when Lampley said that. He was trying to hold, move, and buy time to recover. His clinching obviously needs work, but he survived the round.
It wasn’t Merchant’s decision to cut the interview off. Due to limited time, I think he was ordered to ask just one question. Which is still pretty lame. And did Lampley really say the crowd was booing Khan for the last 3 rounds? :huh I also heard Bradley and Alexander were in the audience. Would it have been too much effort to get their views, in-between one of the rounds, on the action before them? I mean, they are going to be their likely opponents after all. HBO’s team have had some shitty moments this year, and yes, it does seem as though they only care about their own US fighters. Their commentating of the Pavlik-Martinez fight laughable. And Williams-Martinez was heading the same way with the Kellerman’s “Williams is beginning to land the harder shots”, despite the Argentinean – Martinez – landing two jaw-cracking lefts seconds before. We also had the Jacobs-Pirog fight, where the brilliant European sensationally knocks out the much hyped Jacobs, and doesn’t even get an interview! The same thing happened with Kotelnik. He tames and schools the talented Alexander, gets robbed in the process, and they don’t even bother asking how he felt. :verysad
