I saw their first episode and liked it. Haven't seen any of the other episodes since. I like the idea of the gatti list. It would be nice if they could actually show highlights of some of the less well known fighters that are on the list. The show is designed to target boxing fans that are true boxing fans but aren't hardcore boxing fans. i.e. the 30 to 50 somethings that have good paying jobs, families and actually pay for HBO....instead of streaming it or watching it on youtube. The whole premise of this show is that these fans love boxing, want to hear news and good discussion about boxing...but are getting basically nothing in the way of news or discussion anywhere else. So basically HBO has to start with engaged fans that know absolutely nothing and try to get them somewhere closer to where all of us are. I'm sure their goal is to get more indepth then they are right now but if their target audience is basically starting at 0 its going to take some time before they can get to the level they want to be at. On a completely different note: Props to Ringside. Its probably the best boxing magazine show on english tv right now. They do a really good job highlighting both british boxing and the big world championship fights. They also cover more than just the sky fights/fighters. I like it a lot. In this Corner with Russ anber and Darren Dutchyshen on TSN (in Canada) used to be the best boxing magazine show on TV. Its too bad it got cancelled a long time ago.
They hardly even have unknown fighters on the list anymore, as the most obscure this week was either Leo Santa Cruz or Mike Alvarado. Also Ward and Vitali were bizarrely included.
Meh you'd learn how to watch TV and study at the sametime. I used to worry about my addiction to boxing screwing up my educational future too. That was 10 years ago. Still an addict and still going strong.
Provided his opponents aren't bums Vitali is usually in good fights. Ward is an inside fighter. Some people like that style.
I thought Chavez being included was undeserving, too. He covered up, backed up, and only really gave an absolute gutsy good in the last round (He tried, but not Gatti level). They're propping this entire 12th round excitement to justify an unwanted and undeserved rematch. It sure makes them a hell of a lot more money than a Pirog or Golovkin fight, though.
I used to love In This Corner. I remember after Pascal beat Dawson, Anber said it was going to come back around winter time. So much for that...
Yeah if their intention was to celebrate exciting fighters from last weekend, JSK and Maidana would be the first two I'd include since they not only put on the best fight of the weekend but are also probably the most consistently entertaining of the bunch. Yet neither of them appears on the list and Chavez Jr is included to further sell the rematch, which is also being justified on the basis of how much he "learned" in the first one.
Steve Kim. Wow thats a name I havent heard In a while. I used to watch Doug Fischer and Steve Kim religiously back in the day. Now that was a boxing show.
