Calzaghe for 3 reasons. 1. He has had a complete career, Cotto has many fights ahead of him. 2. Calzaghe defeated the man (Hopkins) who defeated the man (Wright) who defeated the man (Mosley) who is Cotto's best win. 3. Calzaghe retired undefeated at 46-0-0 which is very impressive whether he had a late start to good opposition or not. Cotto may become better then Joe overtime, but not yet. If he was undefeated and beat Margarito then maybe.

Cotto beating ZAB is a better win than Joe C beating left-hook Lacy, Cotto beating Mosely is a better win then Joe C beating Hopkins, why? Cotto won his match a bit more convincingly and looked better. Cotto beat Quintanna which is a better win than Joe C beating Kessler. Margarito, Malianaggi, Torres and Clottey round out the rest of Cotto opponenets and they are far better than anyone else Joe ever fought. As you can see Cotto is not even close to retirement and yet his resume is already greater than Joe's.
