Get a rope up at about shoulder level and practice moving forwards and backwards along the rope while rolling your head underneath. Even better is to get two ropes and put them across the ring to make an X in the middle and then you can move around more.

You can also practice with a partner, just stand in front of each other and have them throw one punch at a time while you slip or roll it. Then move up to more punches.

next time you do pad work have your coach throw punches at you and make you slip them.

  4. When you throw combos in shadowboxing and bag work, practise a habit to move straight after(you should anyway). Even jabs.

Then work on timing and not becoming predictable.

    Thanks guys,

I think the problem i'm having is that i'm not too bad in pad work (slipping etc) and shadow, but when it comes to sparring it all goes out the window.

I'd like to know if you guys do anything special or different in particular??

If you guys can give any further advice i will take it on board, and thanks for your help.

First, make sure your footwork s right. Once that is right then make sure you move your head right in shadow boxing infrnot of a mirror (make sure it looks 'right'). After that some of the rope drills and using a partner to slip punches are great. One thing I've done in the past is had a partner swing out a foam pole at average hook height, you move toward the partener while ducking the pole, great for combining footwork and headmovement

Let someone swing at you and work on your slipping and counters. Ask them to tone it down a bit though so its not just survival in there. If you counter just touch them, if you wack em good they will want to get their own in, keep it a drill and not sparring.

More of the same with Sergio Martinez (Preparing for this fight with Kelly Pavlik), a guy with such great head movement he will drop he hands whilst stood in front of an opponent.
