Is it just me or did this art die out with the young Tyson and James Toney?

Who do you feel has this in spades?

Boxers who have this seem to be referred to as "throwbacks".

    Justified or not?

Pac is great at moving his head and upper body

    good point by the way

I am concerned about Juanma's lack there of, I saw his fight with Penalosa again last night and it really is starting to worry me, maybe that is why Arum is keeping him away from Caballero

    It's just you.:tong

There will always be fighters that rely on it more than others. There were loads of guys around in Tyson and Toney's prime that would rely on a solid guard instead.

Now we have people like Gamboa, Floyd etc.. plus any fighter that uses the shell type defence has to have good head movement otherwise they wont be able to pull it off. Even at the weekend there were a few with good head movement - Anthony Small v Hall is a pertinent example. Small used the shoulder roll a lot and Hall used the Tyson bobbing and weaving style.

You know, there are two HW's who have very good head movement (or at least sometimes demonstrate it).

Those are Chagaev and John Ruiz. Ruiz used to have very good head movement but gave it up at some point. Chagaev has excellent head movement.

Is there any reason the term "throwback" should apply?

And is it fair to say that "old" fighters used this more than blocking as a defence?

Chagaev did show good head movement against Klitschko, but unfortunately he couldn't throw punches off of his movements.

from the classic forum, throwback seems to be refered to fighters with a seamless defence and offence.

james toney is a good example of this while roy jones isnt. yah semme:blood

juan diaz has great head movement that he uses to throw counters off very effectively. cotto actually utilizes some damn good head movement when he wants to despite the "lack of defense" many people claim he has.

Tyson bought it back, it was dying art. CUs D'amato style also had exagerated head movement, which some said was too much. Cus taught that one style, hands high, exagerated bobbing and weaving. If it worked, like it did with Tyson and Patterson things went great. TYson being so popular, and moving head so much, made it something others tried to copy.

Duran, Hagler, and many others moved heads to avoid shots, but did it subtley.

After that, his head was only moving one way. Down.
