Hey can any of you guys point me in the way of some bad ass videos. Or better yet, can any of you guys give me a few pointers on head movement. I'm having trouble with this. And the whole concept of angles is really ****ing with me.
You don't actually move your head, you move your body so your head moves but it's always balanced. Once you get used to moving around and keeping your head balanced the angles come easily.
I stand in front of a mirror. Keep my eyes focused on the point where my opponent would be and move my body from left to right as fast as i can. Great lower back workout.
I usually look at emulating Tyson as far as head and lateral footwork in trying to get angles at opponents.
youtube a load of Tyson's amatuer videos. I say amatuer because you have to move your head more due to the presence of headgear. The thing too many guys do with head movement is forget to attack off it. Moving your head should only really be a means to an attack under most circumstances. Otherwise block or step off cos the longer you're moving the more likely you are to catch a hit. Obviously there are some exceptions but there isn't alot of room for error.
The idea is pretty simple, don't be where the punch is. Tie a rope from one side to the gym to the other, and shadowbox while ducking underneath it. You could practise slipping with a sock filled with sand on a rope, swing it and get out of the way at the last moment. Make sure your feet are well placed, if you feel out of balance at any point the problem is likely footwork. The best way to practise would of course be sparring, start slow and increase the tempo.
You cant and should not move your Head. Its Biomechanicaly impossible not to in Balance, when you do.
I don't get it, why shouldn't you move your head? I get not just throwing your head around, and turning the body to move the head, but that is still moving your head out of the way of a punch. So how is balance an issue?
This. Weight isn't supposed to be perfectly balanced down the middle anyway, you're constantly shifting it.
Head doesnt move, the body does..Head is the command centre of the nervous system which should be on a level plain. Otherwise balance and ocular perception is lost, so the oral cavity cannot perform as it should. Correct posture is lost, now you have 2 fights your opponent and gravity.
It comes with experience. I have a decent rhythm where I move my head, but if you're talking about seeing a punch coming and avoiding it with head movement in sparring...I may have done that like twice lol. I recommend thinking of it in terms of offense rather than defense. Defensive head movement is awesome but you're going to get beaten up while you work on it. Work on generating offense with your head movement and the defense will come in time. Also, a great percentage of head movement (and angles) is footwork. You've got to move them feet.
Good advice. I remember this one guy who was so obsessed with slipping punches, he almost forgot to throw his own that the damned judges had to give it to the other guy.
