There is no doubt Haye is a quality boxer who took Wlad 12 rounds, regardless of the limitations he displayed on that day. The trouble is tho IMO that Haye concentrates so much on things outside the ring that he HW career has turned into one long saga that people are sick of. He went all in on the last fight and didn't have the cards. If he is going to insist on retirement before he turns 31 he should just retire. If he is going to rehabilitate his reputation against a valid top 10 player he should do it sooner rather than later. Vitali is booked in September. Haye should fight around then as well, NOT wait until 2012 with 6 months odd of BS in between. Retire or fight this year against someone of note.
A win over an undefeated Povetkin or Chisora (assuming one beats Chagaev and the other Fury) looks much better on the resume than another near-shutout over Haye, and a win over Arreola is about equal to a win over Haye, infinitely more entertaining, and Arreola is more deserving of it.
Forget Povetkin or Chisora. Povetkin will find another root to fall over and hurt himself before he ever faces Wlad. Chisora, nice guy but just is so inarticulate. The BOXING GIRL, hostess of this E.S.B. radio show tried so hard to make this guy something..... she tried so hard, the guy is boring, nuff said. You have a point with Arreola. He brings some excitement but he is a foul-mouthed individual...every second word is vulgar, potty mouthed excrement. David Haye doesn't do that rubbish. He is very witty and flamboyent; very intelligent in his putdowns that get the casual boxing fans blood boiling. Decapitated heads with a funny retort to a reporter. Arreola just slings profanity. No comparison. Haye will sell this next fight and both he and Wlad will make millions. IMO, Wlad K.O's Haye this time. He will risk it all to shut the braggart up.
So the best match is the most promotable. I think I see what sort of fan you are now. Not necessarily of boxing, but of hype/buildup and seeing fighters fool the public into buying PPVs, bet their wages, etc. Cool, I suppose it takes all kinds. I'd rather see Wlad continue to build his legacy with meaningful victories personally.
No, I get your concern. But Haye showed some qualities I and I expect many hardlined fans didn't expect. Haye shut down Wlad's vaunted left jab like no fighter has done in years. Haye showed a superior chin than many imagined. The English dude took some serious shots, especially in the 5th round. He showed great defensive head movement on the back foot, even when rocked. Steward pointed to that in the post-fight press conference. Finally, Haye did actually connect with the Hayemaker a few times, especially in the final round. Haye IMO brings not only promotion and excitement to his challenge of Wlad but also a serious athletic ability and skillset that the rest of the contenders lack. In the final analysis, it's how many bums you put in the seats and Haye does that with aplomb. If the second fight comes about it could well be Wlad's greatest triumph.
If Povetkin beats Chagaev then I guess he's a better opponent on paper, even though neither of these boxers have been on the rise of late. IF Povetkin grabs the paper title he will be in no rush to fight Wladimir--any talk of wanting to fight Wlad from his camp is likely hype. However if Wlad were to offer Povetkin a fight before he beats Chagaev then Povetkin wouldn't be more deserving than Haye. You must be joking if you think Chisora or Arreola are suitable opponents for a title fight compared to Haye. Either is relatively easy for Wlad to beat and makes for a highlight reel KO. Neither have done anything significant to get in line. With Haye at least there is some suspense, some intrigue. But I can't blame Wlad for wanting to move on and not have to deal with Gaye.
A win over Haye is better than a win over Chisora or Arreola. However, a second win over a previously dominated Haye, for the resume, is not superior over a first KO of yet another undefeated contender (certainly of less prestige than most of Wlad's previously undefeated victims, granted) or an aggressive, exciting fighter with a strong chin who has fought most of his fights in the US. Shutting out Haye again or knocking him out proves little. People would see the scores of the first meeting on Wlad's resume and wonder "Why did this guy get another shot?" "British PPV."
Vitaly wants Haye ... so lest get it on Haye - Vitaly in later 2011 and then if Haye proves he is better than Vitaly (or Adamek just in case he wins) get him rematch with Wlad for an undisputed spot.
I didn't think it was a good fight, both men fought scared, I don't want to see a rematch. If Haye had taken more risks to win this, he might have deserved a rematch, but he didn't. As for the toe excuse, that's just so lame. As James Toney put it: 'I fought 10 rounds with a torn biceps and triceps, I don't wanna hear that sh*t!'
