Hear Me Out: Brandon Figueroa Belongs on the Pound for Pound List

I think the second Fulton loss really hurts him, it was too recent too.

 

He has an excellent resume but not p4p. Honestly stylistically he’s an extremely difficult fight for most. Like Brandon would be way tougher for Inoue than Fulton was.

 

Figueroa had arguably a career-best win at the weekend, and I backed him to win, but I still wouldn't have him P4P. He's definitely an elite fighter at featherweight, but he's looked poor, struggled with Joet Gonzalez, and his second loss to Fulton was pretty comprehensive, too. Amazing fighter though.

 

I think there's a big asterisk over both Yamanaka wins because of Nery's failed tests and failure to make weight for the rematch. P4P, it is probably still a win that is on par with Ball, but I think the manner of the Ball win trumps it, and the fact that it was against a full-blown featherweight, in his backyard, and was a stoppage.

I think his win over Magsayo is on the same level, too. Mark beat Gary Russell, who many people had on the fringes of that P4P list (I never, but only because of his inactivity) - and then he was robbed in the Vargas fight, he should've been undefeated going into that one, too. Figueroa battered him. Fig is definitely between 10-20 somewhere on the P4P list, though; he's extremely underrated.

 

I would say no. The Fulton loss is very recent and he was completely outclassed by Cool Boy in that fight. Still a pretty good resume overall and IMO better than Collazo resume.

 

i dont think he is skilled enough to be put on the p4p list. hes tough, relentless and awkward, which makes him hard to beat, but in the art and science of boxing, he doesnt rise above his peers.

 

It’s just not p4p to win a vacant title, defend it instead of unifying, then a solid win against Nery to unify and then lose against Fulton in the first defence. Then gets an interim position and loses again against Fulton, so with the best will in the world he is not worth of the position, based on the fact that the guy who defeated him twice isn’t even close to p4p

 

I pretty much agree with most of this but let’s not forget what p4p means, the sanctioning bodies and the ring magazine are the top 10 so there’s no way you can extend the p4p to the top 10-20

Yeah, point taken, Boxrec has the list extending down to the top 25/30. I just meant Fig is on the fringes of a top 10 for me, I think that Ball win puts him on that cusp, potentially. A couple more good wins at 126 and avenging the Fulton loss would probably get him in there.

 

I don't see it. This performance wasn't too awe inspiring and to me, ball was always overrated. He was just allowed to get away with stuff.

I think you don't know much about boxing you if you think p4p is just about resume's and not the skills they display in the ring. If you think Figueroa is in the same class as Benavidez in terms of in ring ability I suggest getting some glasses. I also don't think he has a better resume. You say David caught his best opponents on the way down yet 4 of the 5 champions he beat had a total of 3 losses between them.

Not to mention David is undefeated while Figueroa lost twice to Fulton. He is a tough B level fighter but that's it.
