If Avanesayan is so good, why does he keep trying to cherry pick Conor Benn? He’s number 3 with the WBC he should be looking at Mikey Garcia or Ortiz, forwards not backwards.
There is an interview with Hearn before the Algieri fight where he admits that he doesn’t think Benn is ready for Avanesyan. So we know his real thoughts on this. He has decided to spin this narrative to build his next PPV star, as AJ is nearly finished.
Doesn’t have a big enough name is the biggest excuse ever made for home fighters not stepping up. Look at the fighters they did fight instead, and ask yourself if they had a ‘big name’. Invariably they will be fighting no name tomato cans or pensioners and has beens, whilst stating a real opponent doesn’t have a ‘big enough name’ All it means is that they don’t rate their home fighter that highly and are therefore bullshitting. Likely they will wait until a weak enough champion becomes available and then make that fight. Hoping he sneaks through and gets a works trinket. Generally they will overpay the champion and make the fight at home so the odds are stacked in their favour.
If I remember rightly, Conor Benn turned pro on the undercard of the Joshua-Martin "historic world heavyweight championship fight". So you could say he was baptised in Hearn's bull****. It's his destiny.
Agree with all of these bar AJ comments, you may find him false, his promotion sickly etc but there is no denying he is an elite HW. Denying this is just bias.
Joshua was built up for years as a “learning” fighter - he even shouted it at Wembley after scraping past Klitschko. Joshua is still bloody learning nearly a decade later. Hearn clearly saw that unfold and thanks to the “numbers” that none of us see, and no doubt thanks to some loyalty to Benn Sr in the family, Conor is being pushed more carefully. And there’s no fluke title shot like Charles Martin in the wings to speed up the process this time. Must day though, this must be the most low-key for a supposed major UK fighter ever. No talk of eliminators, domestic dust-ups, gathering up belts etc. If it was 80s wrestling they’d manufacture a “TV title” for someone who wasn’t top level but needed a belt as some kind of reward. Or make him “King Benn” and bring him to the ring on a throne.
Behave, why wouldn’t you push for that if you’re in Ava’s camp? You’re after a high profile fight that you think you can win and will pay well, and have repercussions on the world stage. Also, Avanesayan vs Ortiz has been mooted by I think the WBC for their mandatory spot, which Warren / Ava said they want. However, Ortiz has been allowed to have a bout in the interim which he is doing vs McKinson.
Why’s that? he’s making a good few quid off Benn and people are tuning in. What do you you want him to do as his promoter. Not promote him?
No Ortiz pulled out of the fight as his team see Ava as high risk low reward. he’s chosen to go down the WBO route instead. its all well and good chasing high profile fights but because Ava has a much lower profile than his actual ability he’s not going to get those fights. He’s currently sitting around fighting Liam Taylors when he should be in against someone like Kavalauskis in a rematch or Mo Hooker as besides Benn all the decent fights for him are in the US. Those two fights build his profile and sets him up for someone to take him on. Otherwise all that happens is Thurman wins next month jumps over him in the rankings and they order Garcia vs Thurman. A sellable fight for both guys where the reward matches the risk
There's nothing wrong with moving fighters like Benn slowly up the ladder in terms of type and level of opponent. But if you are doing that, have him fight every couple of months, 5 or 6 fights a year, and collect the traditional titles. British, commonwealth, European, etc. Tone down the hype a bit too, because even casuals lose patience when they keep hearing a guy is the next superstar but it becomes clear he's being matched against third raters.
They know he's not ready yet for Avanesyan. He's the future Matchroom cash cow so they will be managing him very carefully particularly in this period.
That's fair enough but he'll then say Benn will fight for a world title in 2022. You can't be not ready for Avanesyan but planning on fighting a Spence/Crawford/Ugas in the same year.
