All part of Papa Hearns' plan as shown on that fishing trip video. This is all just politics and manoeuvering to achieve it.
Wilders going to lose to Fury so hes not in the schedule now. A unification fight between Joshua and fury will over rule any mandos.
Surely it would be in Hearns interest to have 2 mandatories taken care of in one bout, it would free up a slot for a voluntary defence which could be very lucrative and low risk, why would he not want that?
Seeing as there is no real appetite to make the Wilder fight for April - from either side it would seem - I'm more than happy to see AJ vs Whyte II. They have both improved from 2015 and the build-up will be a fun watch, as will the fight, I suspect...
Because he knew the plan was always gonna be Whyte in April. Getting Whyte the mandatory tag can help him try to legitimise this pointless rematch, and it will get that mandatory out the way for longer than it would be if it was from the Povetkin fight. It's a win win. That's why the WBO have backtracked. It's blatantly obvious. Blatantly!
With Wilder and Fury contracted to rematch who do you wanna see Joshua in with ? Who should be the mando in your silly little head ?
I don’t really care for the Whyte rematch, but are you honestly suggesting he doesn’t deserve a title shot after his last 4 wins? I’m not even a fan of Whyte, can’t wait until he gets KOd again, but his last four wins are better than Wilders whole resume. So even though I don’t like the rematch or care for it, it is completely legimate and Whyte has definitely earned it.
1. In today's climate, then yeah, he probably does deserve a title shot. But the only fight that should have been happening in April is Wilder and they ducked it. I'd prefer Ortiz, Usyk, Hughie (should he beat Pulev) over Whyte. 2. Ortiz is far better than Parker, cmon. Lucus Browne was horrific and was KOd violently by Chisora in sparring only 10 days before the fight. Helenius is garbage and in my eyes & many others, Chisora beat him. But that was five fights ago. You have included Malcolm Tann - the less said the better. Ortiz is better than Parker, Washington is better than Browne and Szpilka/Molina/Duhaupas are better than that version of Helenius. I'm not defending Wilder's resume as a whole. I think it's been a joke. I don't include Stiverne because I believe they were fixed.
I don't think it stacks up. There's a marginal advantage as you say in delaying the next mandatory from the WBO, but when you think about how valuable a free slot could've been in developing AJs career? If he needs to justify the Whyte match up he just has to point to the ratings. Whyte is in the top 5 across the board. Easy also to market it as the guy who beat AJ in amateurs so they're 1 apiece with Dillian having rocked AJ in their previous fight and improved since and of course he's the guy Wilder didn't want to face. No mandatory needed for any of those approaches? If I were Hearn I would've wanted Povetkin to resolve 2 mandatories if that were indeed possible.
Well, we will see when the WBO make Whyte the mandatory after their bizarre backtracking. The Whyte rematch will be met with ridicule by many, especially after AJ done that poll for his opponent and Whyte only got 5%. The mandatory line will be a perfect spin. Wilder agreed to fight Whyte as long as there was an agreement in writing that he would be AJ's next opponent. Hearn refused. Now he's facing a better opponent.
They did the poll. The majority of fans voted for Wilder, and a new offer has since been made to Wilder. If Wilder doesn't accept it, or stalls again like he did just a few months ago, then obviously Joshua will end up fighting his mandatory.
