Interesting little article I found today. Your thoughts?

    ---

Las Vegas -- Thomas Hearns thinks Sugar Ray Leonard may be on steroids.
Leonard thinks Hearns should be a comedian instead of a boxer.
"Tommy's come a long way in eight years," Leonard said Thursday. "Now he can do a monologue."
Hearns livened up a final joint pre-fight appearance of the fighters Thursday by suggesting that Leonard used steroids to bulk up for Monday's scheduled 12-round fight.

"You're like you've been using steroids or something," Hearns told Leonard. "It's like you think you're a body builder. You've blown up like a big balloon."
Hearns' manager, Emmanuel Steward, took it a step further, saying he will ask the Nevada State Athletic Commission to test both fighters for steroid use before and after the fight.
"I've been hearing too much of it the last five or six days from sources that Ray has been using steroids," Steward said. "I'm seriously going to make it part of the physical."

Leonard, who has noticeably bulked up in the upper body for the fight, laughed off the allegation. His attorney, Mike Trainer, said he welcomed it.
"The message has gotten across that Ray's bigger and stronger than the man he fought in 1981," Trainer said. "They're throwing this out to stir things up. It's fun."

Commission officials said they have no plans to test either fighter for steroids.

Hearns made it to 190lbs Ray Leonard capped out at 168lbs and looked tiny next to Lalonde (spelling?) He looked like he just started eating properly at 160lbs he was a former kid gymnast and given Angelo’s moaning about weights… like James Toney with Bill Miller (yes even at 160lbs) I’d suppose he’d do it in secret he ain’t built like someone who just does the boxing basics we didn’t have guys built like Leonard till the 80s he obviously did some kind of resistance training but also given it was the 80s-90s it’s 90% likely Hearns was just as dirty on PED’s.

@roughdiamond It actually amazes me sometimes that people think you can look like your favourite boxer by hitting a bag or running / some push ups between rounds… do people really think Harold Johnson looked like that because he was so absurd his genes were magic? Have people seen IFBB pros before they started lifting? Those guys have the highest 0.1% genetic predisposition toward horse like muscularity and before ever touching a weight and nothing outside gym class they don’t look like Harold Johnson or Ken “my genes” Norton… Franco Columbo a freak among freaks was a same day weigh in amateur featherweight and have a look at the pics from that time lol PEDs are everywhere our favourite boxers did more then hit the bag.

Who isn't, No plans to test either fighter, without enhancement drugs there would be no sports.

Frustration imo... Hearns and Leonard were great friends since their amatuer days and long before they became rivals

    100%.

I lift and can lift pretty heavy for your average gym. I'm always one of the stronger guys. But I got a friend who never lifts, only drinks and smokes, runs 6-1 and a fat 280. I watched him single-handedly carry a 370 pound Hammond organ up a very narrow, low clearance basement staircase and give not a complaint. Re **** strong. I asked his brother, a friend, was this normal for him. And his brother told me that he's always been like that, a total freak strength wise. Out of my league I am not ashamed to say. Some folks are built differnt.

Not to mention the fact Hearns seemed to suddenly develop lethal power once he turned pro. I wouldn't say it's a distinct sign of a ped usage, but in this case I find it hard to ignore.

I don’t think his power is entirely a product of some shady pharmacist I believe that someone taught him to use his hips properly the chances are he could’ve been punching all at the shoulders in that amateur way and that it took a good eye like Bill Miller (who at one time had Hearns) or Emmanuel Steward to fix him up.

Seems to me like You two have completely opposite views - but in any case, I agree with Your take. Harold Johnson-like or Ken Norton like physiques can definitely be achieved without steroids... for some people. It's not that unique.

You can look that way without steroids. Harold Johnson isn’t THAT impressive he’s impressive for a boxer of his era not a gym goer. Ken Norton is big doe but neither got there by being born special and hitting the bag… them saying so is silly and agreeing with it to me shows how stupid folks are it’s fairy tail BS Charles Bronson said he was “born that way” as well because lifting weights was seen as girly vain behaviour… lastly NO manual labour / farming doesn’t make you big that’s a belief held by people who don’t do manual labour or work a property.

Ok - and to clarify, You think that if They just did their regular boxing routine, aka "hitting the bag" and added steroids on top of that, then that kind of physique is expected result?

Terance Crawford is one of those guys. He's always looking for the biggest guy in any room he walks into. They videos of him making 300lb security guys tap out. Just last week Shannon Sharpe was having trouble moving him.

The Hearns power thing was heavily documented by Steward as he was turning pro. He was taught proper leverage and a number of Kronk power tweaks as Steward believed his amateur style wouldn't translate to the pro's. He suddenly sat down on his punches and had intent. He never did this in the ams and had no chance of delivering big power. He was a bit of a pitter patter man.

Yeah, I've heard something along these lines before in the 4 Kings book, but I didn't know it had come from Steward himself though, so that's cool. Thanks JT.

I do suspect that all of them were on the juicy juice, though.
