Official verdict was a SD win for Barkley. As Boxrec has it...

Your thoughts? Who was most in line?

referee: Mills Lane | judge: Jerry Roth 114-113 | judge: Chuck Giampa 115-113 | judge: Lou Tabat 113-114

I was at this fight & when the word was announced it was a S/D everyone boo'd the house down. From my perch, Barkley dominated the fight. I have'nt watched it on tape for a long time though. One observation was made by my wife who bumped into Iran & his team when they were on their way back to the dressing room. She hates boxing and she was appalled at the pain Iran was in, I recall her words that she heard Iran say to his team, I won man, I won, I'm gonna be rich, I'm the champ, rich for ever man! near or near about's & delivered from a man in great agony. My missis just screamed at me, calling me & everyone else a fukin barbaric animal, how can you people watch this she bleated! That's the last time I'm ever bringing you to Vegas, **** of back to the room. I just left her standing there all indignant looking as I fled with all other sane like minded fight fans straight into Caesars & the nearest bar for an all nighter.

Some where in the ballpark of 8-3-1, Iran. All Iran. Any round Tommy won was close. Barkley had the knockdown and dominated a lot of the rounds he won.

He set the tone in the first round and was a pitbull in there that would not let Tommy box off his pitchers mound. I think that surprised some people that Iran would set and keep that pace. And that Tommy could hold up that long being backed to the ropes. Who'd ever done that to Hearns?

You can clearly see Barkley in agony in his first go with Hearns, too.

Hearns really did a job on even people who beat him (check out Leonard's swollen eye in their first fight and Hagler leaking).

I'm surprised the judging was that bad, but at least they
Barkley should have won by a wider margin. It was only that close, because Barkley's not the most popular fighter and Hearns got the very close ( flip of the coin) rounds. Barkley fought a good fight.

I had it 114-113 Barkley, but it could have been a bit wider.

I had it close for Barkley. Hearns landed the quality shots but got outworked.

The problem was that Hearns was hitting Barkley easily even though he was backing up. He was busting him up, so Barkley was winning on style but getting hammered. I think that fight wore Barkley out for later, and Hearns. Tommy never was the same again. Hard fight to score. Barkley was working and swinging but Tommy was sharper and landing sharper in spurts. Tommy had a chance to win that fight had he won two more rounds, and the rounds were close. Barkley getting hit so clean is why the fight was closer than people thought. Being there people probably thought Barkley was dominating, but close up on TV you could see Hearns landing clean. Barkley took some punches in that fight which no one should take clean. He is a warrior but to take punches like that in the long run wore him out.
