Barkley had the style to push Hearns back and land, but he also took clean punches. So he paid for the wins badly. I think Hearns hurt him more physically than anyone else except maybe Toney, who really beat him up in that win. I like Barkley, but he needed more wins against top guys to get into the Hall of Fame. He thought beating one legend that he was a legend, and you have to do a little more. Your whole legacy cannot be built on one fighter. You need other great wins to show variety and domination of different top fighters and he lacks that. And I think that frustrates Barkley.
Barkley is sure HOF. Being a 3 division champ and beating Hearns twice gets the job done in my opinion.
Barkley won by 2 or 3 points, he simply won due to his work rate and the knock down. No way did Hearns win
I don't think beating one legend gets you there. He lost to Kalambay, Nunn, Duran, Benn and Toney and others over and over. That is Hall of Fame? I wish I could say he was Hall of Fame, I like Barkley but he lost a lot.
I think it was close and probably Barkley wins it, but I think Hearns landing cleaner than Barkley means had he landed just a few more combinations at the end of some of those close rounds he wins the decision. He was landing on Barkley clean and hurt him a few times. He actually hurt him with a left to the body and then left hook to the head.
When you are looking at certain fighters who made it in the HOF, Barkley makes it easily.HOF is not the same as ATG
I actually thought Tommy won- cleaner punches. One thing for sure they both beat the crap out of oneanother.
There is still a standard because if you put Barkley in, then you eliminate someone like say Donald Curry. Now do you think Barkley deserves HOF over Donald Curry or Michael Nunn? Who beat Barkley. Or Kalambay
Tommy was already on the decline, but this fight sort of took the last elite skills from him. His legs were never the same again and he became more of a guy who either knocked a guy out or completely struggled to win in those last years of his career. Barkley just slowly declined. But they sort of beat the heck out of each other in a way wher they both did not recover.
Hearns vs. Barkley was one of those fights which was underrated. It was grueling and the damage on both guys was incredible. Hearns had a broken nose and hand. Barkley had broken ribs a cut head and his whole face swollen up, and so was Hearns. Barkley couldn't really walk after the fight because of the ribs. That is why fighters should retire if they get older because this kind of fight hurts them. Hearns had another one like this, but it is not as reported. He had his nose broken again in 1994 against a fighter named Freddie Delgado and his jaw was swollen in that one.
