Hearns Top 5 performances??

with Hearns, the unfair thing is he is always compared to Hagler,Duran,Leonard and a little Benitez. The fab 4 has helped his legacy but maybe in someways he losses a little of his own accomplishments in it.

 

You must be new.. Everyone loves the hitman here .. And i understand why, Hearns was badass!

 

I am one of Tommy's biggest fans but that leg massage thing is an excuse and that is all. I think in a rematch he might have been able to get the fight slower and he proved he could hurt Marvin if he hit him, so I think he could have knocked out Marvin, and Marvin never fought him again. Didn't seem to want to. I think Marvin put his all mentally and physically in that fight.

As for the leg massage. I never thought about it at all. When Duran makes excuses I always say they are just excuses and they are, and in this case this is just an excuse for Tommy. I love Tommy don't get me wrong and his resume is filled with great fighters which exceeds most resumes, but Marvin came out with the gameplan to make Tommy fight and he had a great chin and he won in a legendary fight. Marvin was not going to let Tommy box in that fight regardless of Tommy's legs. Tommy would have had to hold and clinch and hit Marvin when Marvin was walking in. Maybe if he did that a few rounds Marvin would have been tired by the late rounds, but Tommy was in no mood to clinch in that fight. You could tell the confidence he had by stopping Duran meant he thought he would hit and stop Marvin. Marvin put himself into a mental state I don't think he would ever be in again. Great fight for him and fight plan, but in that one night I think he took all the remaining intensity he had for boxing.

 

Hmm it's hard to say, I saw a recent interview with Ray and Tommy, and Tommy says his legs were shaking before the fight. It helps to explain why he looked completely gone at the end of round 2. I agree that he didn't show Marvin enough respect, he was throwing punches recklessly, not even setting them up. Once he broke his hand, it was all over. I don't think either Tommy or Marvin were ever the same again after that night

 

no neither was ever the same. Hearns was still good enough and had enough left to win titles, but he was shaky after that and seemed vulnerable in a way he was not before that. Marvin really only fought 2 times after Hearns and fought one year later and another year after that, and looked bad in both fights.

Just thinking back to the fight, I know you don't believe it to have any effect, but Tommy just didn't have his legs beneath him the whole fight. Even against Sugar Ray when he got hurt, he was able to get on his bike and box on the backfoot, against Hagler, his legs just weren't there.

Marvin left everything in the ring that night. It's alarming how much he'd slowed down against Mugabi. I personally believe Marvin Hagler is the greatest MW of all time.

If Tommy had to tried to box Hagler that night, could he have kept him off for 15 rounds? I struggle to see Tommy having the stamina to run from Marvin for that long, without taking some punishment.

 

I'd put Benitez at one if it wasn't such a boring fight. He out-boxed the boxer.

 

Duran, Benitez, Cuevas, Hill, not sure about the fifth.

As far as Tommy having a poor gameplan against Hagler, I credit Hagler for forcing Tommy to brawl and swarming him. Hearns did try to get more l distance midway through the first, but Hagler cut him off and got him on the ropes. Hearns tried to box and move in the 2nd and some of the 3rd, but Hagler kept getting to him.

Hagler gave one of the best "out-of-character" performances ever. He didn't just fight out of his usually style against anyone, he did it to perfection in order to beat an ATG in Hearns.
