Hearns had a hard time hitting him. Benitez was amazing. It is sad the condition he is in today.

    Wonderful chess match.

For the most part, Tommy refused to play Wilfred’s game when Benitez would back to the ropes and look the counter. Hearns would come in with one shot, maybe two, and take a full step back out of the range of El Radar.

You couldn’t hit Wilfred with a handful of salt, but Tommy found a way to win the fencing match and avoid the counters.

This fight did not hurt Benitez legend at all. It was amazing how he avoided Hearns punches. Hearns had the jab which made it possible for him not to have to get suckered into the ropes like Benitez could have.

It was near the end of the 4th or 5th round when the bell went off..I know he had a quick knockdown over him but I thought there was a time or two where Hearns came close, but like in the Hagler fight ,he broke his hand.Used the jab for the remainder..

Tommy knocked Wilfred down, but he did not come close to landing a clean punch on him the whole fight, which is amazing to think. Wilfred is the only guy whom Hearns did not land clean on. Wilfred had some sort of talent to see the punches or know when his opponent was going to throw a punch. It was an amazing thing, but not something you can teach a person. I don't think. Not that sort of talent. Benitez was rare.

Hearns clearly controlled the fight with Wilfred dodging lots of punches but not being aggressive enough. The end of the 6th Hearns nailed him and had him in trouble on the ropes before the bell soundedHearns may have finished him then..but ya never know.Hearns knockdown of Benitez was more legit of Wilfred's of Hearns..Hearns stamina was amazing that night..

yes it did. And he was not beaten up at all. Hearns could not really hit him. Benitez just had no answer for the reach and counterpunching speed of Hearns. It was a chessmatch. Benitez should have stayed at 154 and not moved up, which broke up his momentum. 154 was his best weight almost, but 160 was too much. That was a case where 6 pounds meant too much.

Not at all. Benitez i am pretty sure was the mild favorite. Many thought he would be too slick for Hearns, with Hearns going hard for a ko. Hearns measured tactics surprised just about everyone, including Wilfred!
