After I watched these 2 fights, I just thought that they were similar in terms of their game plans. Hearns started fast and kept attacking Duran from all directions while Duran wasn't ready to counter Hearns' lightning attacks. Hagler did pretty much the same to Hearns as he was attacking him quickly from the start but got a bad cut in round 1 so he needed to finish him as quickly as possible. The only difference of these 2 fights that I saw was Hearns v.s. Hagler was a war! when both fighters tried to KO each other by trading punches all the time and both of them got hit while Hearns v.s. Duran was just a one-sided beat down. So, I just thought that Hagler used the same game plan as Hearns used it to beat Duran. That was using surprised attacks. What you think? Lets discuss it.
Hearns used his significant advantages in range and height against Duran, and jabbed a lot more. He used that jab to the body effectively. Hagler, on the other hand, had to close the distance. He couldn't box in his usual manner because Hearns was so good from the outside, he had to take it inside and swarm Tommy. Tommy bombarded Duran, but was most dangerous at longer range so he could get full leverage and extension on that right hand.
hagler was able to close the gap on hearns duran couldn't another wacky a b c fight was the duran barkley hearns barkley fights duran rolled with barkley where as hearns just went head on and got blasted out
Yeah.... because of those physical disadvantages, Duran was in a serious situation when fighting outside against Hearns. However, I agreed with the things you said in another thread of mine that Hearns should have boxed Hagler in that fight. He never thought that Hagler was going to start fast like that so he probably didn't know what to do in that situation but brawling with him. I guessed.
Hearns should have boxed, but it's hard to when the guy is all over you. Hearns got some distance in the middle of the first round, but Hagler was able to cut him off and get him on the ropes. From the 2nd round on, Hearns did try to use more distance and box on his toes and on the retreat, but Hagler kept getting to him. It's one of those "easier said than done" things, IMO.
Well! Another factor was Hearns was not a durable fighter like Hagler. Whenever he got hit cleanly he stumbled like a drunk man.
Keep in mind that hearns broke his right hand in Hagler fight(1st round i belive) Steward also said that his legs were gone that night(don't know how much I can trust it).
