The thing is this - modern boxing would have Basilio losing some fights stopped due to cuts. He used to cut up pretty bad and it need not be a KO to stop him.
Yes Basilio did get cut, He was cut vs Robinson, I can see Hearns winning on a stoppage, but a flat out Knockout. I dont see it. I think had Basilio fought today, A few fights would have went against him in regards to cuts. But on the whole, Basilio would have won his fights. I think it would be a great fight, I give Basilio the edge the longer the fight went on. But like I said, I dont think it will end by knockout for Hearns.
Carmen Basilio is my favorite fighter of all time. But the thoughts of Hearns unloading those right hand bombs on Carmen's chin frightens me to no end. Tommy sure gave the fans lots of excitement during his career with his power punching. Carmen had a great chin and could dish it out as well. I think that most people don't give Basilio enough credit for his defensive skills. I have watched alot of his fights and noticed that he could dodge alot of the bullets coming his way. He did sometimes take two to land one of his own. IMO he was a much finer boxer than he is given credit for. He was never knocked off of his feet until his last fight with Paul Pender and then he was able to go the 15 round distance. Robinson, Fullmer, DeMarco, Gavilan, Gil Turner and Saxton couldn't drop him but maybe Hearns could. I guess I would have to reluctantly pick Hearns to win this one although my heart goes with Carmen.
Hearns stops Basilo on cuts in 14. Tommy didn't kayo everyone at 147 (i.e Weston jr), but he could do enough damage to Carmen to force a stoppage.
Bad fight for Carmen. Hearns is too quick with too much reach and fire power for Basilio to get inside often enough win.
