Alright folks, can someone please enlighten me on how the showdown between Tommy Hearns and Charles Burley would go at 147 and then at their best weight. I don't know much about Burley but, I know Hearns was a monster. I only give SRR and SRL (obvious reasons) to beat Hearns. Just looking at some of the threads, some claim that Burley would have beaten SRR, which is hard to imagine. Thanks.
Burley was dodged by then very tall 5 11 1/2 Robinson...so the fight goes the distance.... Someone too slick for Robinson, is too slick for hearns or Leonard.
Too slick for SRR & SRL? Damn! I guess I'll have to bring in the wold card Roy Jones Jnr. Is Burley too slick for him as well? It's real hard to image anyone outboxing Hearns. I can understand it if the guy goes toe-to-toe with Hearns and knock him out as we have seen before but, out-slicking Hearns is hard to imagine. Hearns has all the reach and height advantages.
Hearns is a fine boxer and crucially he outreaches Burley. Charley is for sure used to taking on these bigger men, but Hearns is also something of a sharp shooter - I think that Burley's normal plan in this situation, slow things down, potshot to perfection, would not work v Hearns. Burley's plan should be to get busy. He has the power - despite being a pretty poor finisher (Burley forced an huge number of opponents to quit) Burley has a 50% stoppage rate - to stop Hearns so making the hitman a clear favourite would not be sensible. I'd pick Hearns to win a close but clear decision, putting his foot on the gas down the back straight as Burley starts to get desperate, putting it beyond doubt. A KO for Charley is also possible though. And if Hearns gets drawn in, all bets are of.
Burley has been compared to Jones. I'm not sure it's accurate, but Burley-Jones at 160 would be a beauty, don't doubt it.
The only existing film of Charley Burley showed he indeed moved and boxed very similarly to Roy Jones Jr.
