Three different weight classes in those choices. Scary. I've always thought his performance against Cuevas was picture perfect.

Everyone has their opinions on what fighters they like when it comes to personal taste. If any fighter combined the polar opposite styles of Ali and Tyson it was Hearns.

I'll take the Duran performance, slightly over Cuevas.

Anyone out there not a fan of Hearns?

OOps I submitted this thread twice, sorry, maybe it was worthy lol. I choose Duran because of who Duran was and the way Hearns finished him,it was at a time when Hearn's superstar status and power were in question, man did HE deliver..

Good question. Don't see too many people knocking Tommy now that you mention it. All 3 are spectacular fighter but it was inconceivable seeing Duran go down like that. I'll take the Duran fight.

It's too easy to say Duran. However, the thing about Cuevas is 1) up to then, Cuevas was a feared puncher nobody wanted to **** with, 2)Was Cuevas favored to win? and 3) that one put Tommy on the map.

i 'm gonna be the odd one out.
Shuler was a good contender who was clearly in line for title honours. not many felt hearns could cary his power to 160. and bang jab cross drops him down and out.

duran and cuevas were solid fighters but few would say that durans was at a physical peak as he clearly was having trouble making 154...blowing up to 200+ odd. cuevas we found seemed to be a bit chinny and open to any fighter with pucnh and a decent jab.

now black gold was a damn good defencive artist, lovely set of skills and got in the pocket really effectivly.....jab cross and it's all over.

Where pre Hearns did you get the impression he was chinny?

I already picked Shuler in the "other" thead on this..;)

At the the time the Shuler win really impressed me. The big questions in that fight were could Hearns handle middleweights and would he be gun shy after the Hagler slugfest.

Pipino Cuevas, who had that serious rep, and Hearns owned him.Shuler was a bit green, and Duran wasn't probably at his best, though IMO Hearns always has his number.

Cuevas or Duran. Although I thought Tommy outboxing Hill or Benitez was great also. I would pick Duran. I didn't expect Duran to be beaten so convincingly. I thought it would go 12 rounds with Thomas winning a UD.

    Cuevas

I said it before: it was a thing of lethal beauty seeing Tommy to dismantle Pipino with not visible effort

Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns might be the most underrated of the fabulous four of the eighties and in boxing history!! If a person counts just greats or hall of famers then the list was something else!! Hearns fought Cuevas,Leonard,Benitez,Duran,Hagler as well as all the contenders he fought record 3-2-1. 21 title fights. It was unbelievable. He started the nineties outboxing Virgil Hill and winning the light heavyweight title. 6 hall of famers with a 4-2-1 (2)record against them. Underrated guy!! Shuler was a good win but nothing compares to distruction he did to Cuevas and Duran. Hearns outclassed both Duran and Cuevas!!!!!! Who else did that??? To be fair, Hearns was lucky to be in an era where he fought many greats... Most guys do not have that opportunity.
