Janitor surely Dempsey must have exaggerated a smae day weigh in and he was a boiled down Heavy. Surly he would have been more a SMW or LHW.

It could, but in every era, whatever the weigh in rules, you always seem to get fighters who are acused by their peers of going to ridiculous lengths to push themselves into a lower weight class.

I've dug out some stuff I have on the fight, and Fitzsimmons is described as being "the biggest middleweight on record" and "has the appearance of out-classing Dempsey[in terms of weightclass]". Also, there is something here about Fitz coming in a pound overweight and having to be re-weighed. His weight as described here matches the boxrec weight. I think he was legitimately 150lbs, although he had to fight to get there. 147 would be a push for him, but I'm confident he could do the Cotto/Hearns.

I am guessing that in reality he managed to slip under the then 156 lb weight limit by dehydrating, sh1ting and vomiting his way there.

He might have been able to do the Cotto/Hearns routine but I would not take it as a given.

i think Fitzsimmons power is overrated. i think hed have power similar to hearns. I think which made him have the huge punch what people speak about was his accuracy and combine that with littler gloves you get a devastating punch.

I do take it as a given actually, having found this confirmation of his weight for this fight. A guy who can do 150 in 1891 and turn in an excellent performance can do 147 in 2009 with a proper camp.

Well he knocked out big guys cold. Hearns might have had equal power, but he didn't show it.

im not doubting his power he obviously was a huge puncher. But what im saying his accuracy and the littler gloves helped him, i think if Tommy hearns fought with the littler gloves he could coldcock a heavyweight aswell 9as long as his hands held up)

    I don't.

I have read all the stories of Fitzsimmons putting big heavyweights on ice with a single punch or combination and I don't think that delivery alone is enough to acount for it.

Honestly I think that he might have been more dangerous with a single punch than Jack Dempsey.
