Hagler wouldn't win this time around. Tommy softened him considerably the first time. At this point, Marvin is ripe for the taking. I wouldn't be surprised if this one didn't even go the distance.
Hagler would be to small,a rematch at 160 would have even been to much for him,Hearns was much bigger filled out and stronger in the Shuler fight, besides Marvins frame wasnt built for 175 Hagler had a great plan the 1st time around,he would never be able to duplicate that again.
Hearns at 175 in 1987 and without a broken right hand? I think it would be tougher than what some people think since he did fight Hearns already and knew certain things about Tommy, but Tommy would wait and land his right in the midrounds after jabbing and landing punches from the outside, and stop Hagler on cuts.. Hagler had a good chin and Hearns still was a smaller guy than most 175 pound guys. The added weight would make this an even fight on the strength issue which was in Marvin's favor at 160, and an even fight in strength equals a win for Tommy since I think he was faster and a greater fighter than Hagler in most other aspects.
the first fight....the only fight....what am i on? was quicker most probably due to hearns broken right hand. any rematch at 174 or not would be pretty similar. i'm one of the few who felt that hagler could of moved up in weight well. maybe a longer fight but i think hagler catches up with him.
If it comes down to physicality, then Hearns would be the obvious choice at lt.heavy. Naturally bigger guy. Thing is,Hagler did such a number on Tommy, that Marvin would come in with a big psychological advantage. As Cus D'Amato once said. Boxing is 50% mental and 50% physical. Would n't matter if thety both weighed in at 220 lbs. !!!!!!
Theres too much irony in the broken hand excuse for me to dwell on. Hagler broke Hearn's hand with his face. Should that not be more of a credit to Hagler, than a reason for why Hearns lost?
