Bigger, stronger and more powerful is something in my book, even though Hagler was the far superior MW. I also think Barkley adapted better to LHW than Hagler would, due to his larger frame.
Just goes to show how little faith people have in Hagler when he's forced out of his comfort zone. Guy loved to call out fighters from lower weight divisions, but once one of the top players at 175 offered him a meal ticket, he soon shut the **** up.
In the 70s and 80s, the lightheavy division was stacked, but the purses still weren't anywhere near what the Leonard, Duran and Hearns purses were, so a "meal ticket" comment isn't appropriate here. Also, Hagler never indicated at any time any desire to move up to lightheavy in his career. And as far as "calling out fighters from lower divisions", the Duran-Hagler fight was the brainchild of Arum, who saw how close they were in height, not due to Hagler's chasing him. And lest we forget how many times goose that laid the golden egg Leonard teased everyone from Hagler to the boxing public to anyone that was even a fringe boxing fan about a possible Hagler fight for several years.
"Would" is still a big word, Bokaj. I simply don't see Tommy getting out of a Hagler fight without getting stopped. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Yeah, you can save your apologistic ramblings to somebody who gives a ****. Hagler never gave any indication that he was moving up because he never had any intention of ever doing so. He would have made more money than he had ever earned before if he had fought Spinks, but he wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. And Hagler was calling out the likes of Benitez, Leonard and Hearns all the while they were competing as welterweights, and I didn't even reference Duran.
Doesn't have to be. Tommy's one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen, but his weaknesses are well documented. Nobody will ever claim that Barkley was a better fighter than Tommy, but he was naturally bigger, more rugged and far more durable than Tommy, just like Hagler was.
As far as my "saving my apologistic ramblings to someone who gives a ****",you obviously do because you responded to my post. Hagler never wanted anything to do with any lightheavy. He just didn't want to move up. That's it. You and I have done this dance before. And lest we forget Leonard, the big money guy, was the one teasing everyone, including Marv, for many years. As far as calling out Benitez, I don't remember that happening, but I'll take your word for it.
Why do you keep on referencing Leonard? What does he have to do with Hagler being a complete and utter hypocrite and not even entertaining the idea of moving up in weight?
You wrote that Hagler was calling out smaller men. OK. But Leonard was the one who, over several years, brought up a possible Hagler fight. He tickled everyone's interest and kept it going even as Hagler moved on. He even invited Hagler to his will he or won't he retirement party, thereby indulging himself, Hagler and the people foolish enough to pay the entrance fee.He was the one that did the teasing. Btw, just for the record because I don't remember it. When and under what circumstances did Hagler call out Benitez?
I haven't disagreed with that, though. Just said that Barkley had some advantages over Hagler, despite Hagler being far superior over all. I think your guess is very reasonable.
