First leonard gets a gift against hagler, then gets another gift against hearns the second time,I know leonard was the most marketable guy back then but still he did not deserved both wins,I'm not surprised hagler quit boxing after this.:-( :-( :-(
Hearns II was a bad robbery, even Leonard has said that he and Tommy are really 1-1 against each other despite the draw verdict in that fight. Leonard-Hagler is a close fight that you can make a case for either winning, so I don't see it as a robbery. Personally, I lean towards Leonard because Hagler just flat didn't do much in the first half of the fight. The second half was Hagler's, but Leonard did enough in a few of those rounds to get the close win on my card. This belongs more in the Classic section of the forum though.
against hagler i thought it was close and a win for hagler was my assumption...but you couldnt really say he earned it. leonard did win the last moments of the rounds. but it was him not engaging with hagler that made me feel like hagler was robbed. it could of gone anyway. hearns II though is a different matter. leonard did win some round, winning the last round that could of been a 10-8 round to him. point is that leonard did well but just kept walking into huge bombs. this is also a fight that shows that technique beats talent in the long run. hearns used only 3 punches a jab a cross and a left hook to the body and he dominated the fight. leonard was just too small for the wieght and in my opinion too slow just couldnt get out of the way. a rematch with hearns was actually on the cards when leonard was to beat norris...saldy it didnt come through.
Yeah, it was a robbery. As someone mentioned above, even Leonard admitted he lost. Now, doesn't that say it all when even the fighter admits that he lost?
Leonard beat Hagler, I've scored this fight several times and always get Leonard by between 1 and 3 points. He probably lost the second Hearns fight, it depend on how you score the two rounds that Leonard rocked Hearns. If they are both 10-8s then the fight is VERY close.
No way in hell does Leonard deserve TWO 10/8 rounds in that fight. No doubt about it, he rocked the hell out of Tommy a few times, but Tommy stayed up and neither of those rounds were 10/8's in my book. Wouldn't shock me if the judges scored it that way, Vegas judges were just enamored with Ray and only seemed to score against him if he was knocked down. Even had a hard time scoring against him even with a KD.
The Hagler fight was ****ing close. No robbery there. The Hearns II fight...it could be called a robbery. Hearns won.
I agree with a lot of the above posters. Hagler/Leonard was maybe too close to be called a robbery, but I thought Hearns clearly won the remath with Ray.
Leonard lost both fight's especially the Hearns rematch that was a blatent robbery, but Leonard being cast as the then Golden Boy was always given the benefit of the doubt..:-(
exactly, neither hagler or hearns had that "charm" leonard had,he was well like by the mainstream fans unlike hagler or hearns, leonard was the "darling" of boxing back then.
