tough one both of there chins arnt the best both good power and both can box when needed to though for me to say if Terry swammed him early he could catch him but I would favor Hearns
Terry had a bad chin, while Hearns had an average chin. For all of the people who say Hearns was chinny, he took his share a punishment before getting ko'd. He would take a few shots before going down for good. Terry's recuperative powers sucked, and in a shootout with Hearns, this is why he would be starched early. He can't come back from a beating. Hearns could.
For one, I don't remember Tommy coming back from a beating ever. He was stopped in 3 by Hagler, in 3 by Barkley, and didn't take a beating from Leonard until the final rounds. Anyway, I'd say Tommy lands first because Norris had a habbit of sticking his chin up in the air, and Norris' chin was just as bad as Tommy's (if not worse).
Tommy was badly hurt by Leonard in the 7th round of their fight, which is why he was on the move in subsequent rounds and relied on boxing for the rest of the fight. Hearns could take a pretty good punch IMO.
Good point. I would say Tommy's chin was better than Norris', but I don't share your opinion that Hearns could take a pretty good punch without it hurting him. Yes, if he is hurt he can box and move to avoid being hit again, but I don't remember Tommy getting dropped, or hurt badly, or whatever and coming back to win. I guess outboxing Leonard after being hurt counts as coming back, but I was commenting on the post saying Tommy could come back from a beating, I don't call what SRL did to Tommy to hurt him in the 7th a beating, and even so, it was Leonard who rallied back while down on points and his eye sealed shut to stop Tommy. I'm not denying the man's hart, no one can, but I think anybody from 147lbs and up with a solid punch could hurt Tommy with just one shot if landed cleany. Not knock him out, but hurt him. His chin wasn't glass, but it was quite weak in my opinion.
We'll have to agree to disagree. He took some solid shots from Roldan in their bout early on. He may have trouble recovering, but his chin isn't as weak as everyone suggests. He was only ever hurt by big punches from big punchers, often times after sustained punishment.
Reasonable enough. In fact, we may not have to agree to disagree. Most people do exagerate the weakness of Tommy's chin, and I do believe his recuperative powers were generally more to blame. I don't think a guy with the punch of say Margarito (BTW, I say Hearns stops Margo in 6 rounds, I'm using him as an example because he's a solid puncher but nothing special) could stop Tommy with one or two shots, but he could hurt Tommy if landed cleany and possibly stop him if he could follow up with clean shots. I'll say Tommy's chin is just a little less than average.
A prime 154 Hearns would catch Norris early. (RD. 2'ish) Defo not a good match for Norris, he is outgunned in every aspect.
Hearns imo, Norris on a good day is a vicious and quite skilled fighter though, i do believe if he was fortunate in the bout's goings on then he could stop Tommy, i just dont think it would happen and i would always pick Hearns when forced to pick.
The only time I can remember Hearns being hurt under 160 was against Leonard His chin was decent before he moved up to middleweight. Norris on the other hand got hurt by Troy Waters at 154
