Tough one, mainly because there is no opponent in Tommy's career like Jones. My heart says Hearns, my mind says Roy by late KO.
Don't understand either and I think its because they believe that Jones had a poor chin. The truth is this- Jones always had a pretty good chin but when he went down in weight his body was damaged. Not cut it? Well lets look at Chris Byrd a small defensive heavyweight who has been in there with real heavyweight punchers: Tua, Ibeabuchi, Wlad, Vitaly... The point is that when Chris Byrd who has been in there with HW punchers goes down to LHW and gets ko'd by a light hitting LHW journeyman it probably means that he went through what Jones went through making Jones's argument that much more credible.
We've had this discussion before about RJJ's power - I can remember it even if you cannot. To cut a very long story short you somewhat overrate RJJ's power. I would wager that it was RJJ's speed as much as his heavy handedness that caused many of his stoppage wins. To say that RJJ has more power by far than Tommy is frankly ******ed. It's a pretty tough fight to call. It depends on who lands first and although Tommy was not quite as quick as RJJ he was still pretty damn quick! Whoever lands first with a big shot wins.
Id expect a pts win. Jones wont sit down on his shots against Hearns, far too dangerous. Id expect him to pick his way top a pts win.
hearns stalks jones relentlessly but finds that he cant catch him when it gets to the ropes and corners where jones consistently beats him to the punch before scurrying away.. hearns has his moments but jones wins a fairly comfortable decision
Yeah, that sounds about right. Not easy to outbox Hearns, though, but if somebody would do it, it would be Jones.
Prime for prime... Jones I think would do another Leonard type win over Hearns. Speed kills plus he had power. Glass Jaw Hearns get's cracked in later rounds.
