Hearns vs SRR 147

I don't see Hearns surviving Robinson's offensive bursts for more than 10 rounds. He can outbox him for parts of the fight, but when Robinson start throwing those leaping hooks while staying in perfect balance, I'd expect Hearns to get caught at some point and his legs turning to jello. Great fight, tough.

 

I have a hard time visualizing a scenario where Hearns gets outboxed by anyone, incuding SRR, at 147. How do you prepare for a WW with his physical specs? He punched like a LHW, would possess a decisive reach advantage and would also be SRR's equal technically.
I see Tommy controlling distance with the jab(to the head and body) to take away any countering opportunities for Robinson while setting up his right hand and left hook(to the body) in the process. Once Hearns' jab has been established at 147, it'll really difficult for even SRR to be competitive. Before any of you mention the Leonard fight, that result could be attributed as much to heat exhaustion as anything else as Hearns was dominating the fight until his body gave out.

 

I think it actually Mirrors the Leonard fight.

 

I'm not buying heat exhaustion. Ray Leonard realized he wasn't going to outbox Tommy from the outside, so he made it a fight where grit, heart, better chin, and his superior inside game would be decisive. And they were. I would bet a large sum that SRR who was better than SRL in most comparative boxing skills/attributes would be able to reach the same conclusion SRL did and abandon a boxing match fought from the outside and force his way in, or at the very least use an ambush style where one of his leaping hooks would have a good chance of wobbling Tommy eventually.

 

Robinson could pull it out late, but Hearns could win a UD or dare I say KO Robinson, that could happen Hearns has scary power

 

So does Robinson, although he's got more notable KO's and examples of it when he started coming in at 154-160. I tend to think he carried a bigger punch (if nothing else) when he actually grew out of his majestical 'WW Peak'.

I think Hearns is a very dangerous proposition for anyone at welter...IMO the over all hardest puncher the division has ever seen...and add to that one of the best pure boxers in the history of the division as well. But with that said, Robinson would find a way to stop Hearns by turning it into a firefight. I would take Robinson by KO. Leonard hurt Hearns around the sixth round, if he would have been in there with Robinson, he would not have survived any further.

 

People talk about Hearns amazing power at WW and rightfully so but IMO Ray Robinson hit just as hard and with a wider array of punches and he has the much better chin, i can see Tommy winning some rounds early boxing behind his great long accurate jab but he would have to fight the perfect fight in order to win this fight and to stay away from Ray's offensive fire power i dont think he can do that, at some point of the fight Ray will catch up to him ,hurt him and finish him off. Hearns is a H2H monster at this weight theres only maybe a couple of fighters in history i would pick over him at 147 and Sugar Ray Robinson is one of them.

 

Love Hearns...one of my favorites from day one...a freak at welterweight...but fighting SRR
at welter? Dunno about this one...I remember when Tommy took Cuevas apart in 1980 for the title...some writers said that on this night Hearns could have beaten Robinson at welter
...would have been a terrific fight...but I'll take SRR by KO...

 

I was going to comment but my opinion on this too much in Tommy favor. I do think that Hearns could very well knock out Robinson, yet Robinson could very well knock out Tommy. . I know people say this is SRR, how would he be knocked out, but this is Thomas Hearns who had unique power and knocked out the great Roberto Duran and Pipino Cuevas who was dominant as champion.

Agreed. Robinson hit every bit as hard as Hearns. His lefthook his was the greatest single weapon anybody has ever had.

I wouldnt take it for granted that Hearns in going to outbox Sugar Ray either. Robinson had quicker feet, better balance and was nearly as tall as Hearns. He could close distance and float in and out like not many ever did.
