Hearns vs Todays WW's & LMW's

Leonard himself SAID that he couldn't outbox Hearns.

 

Its not quite as simple as boxrec says. The initial rounds went to Hearns, he was catching Leonard sweet, forcing Leonard to move and making it hard for him to stick and fire away. Leonard then managed to stick and unleash on Tito in the sixth and really hurt Hearns with a left hook to the body then a left hook upstairs. Hearns never quite recovered from that and was forced himself to box off the back foot which he did beautifully, doing quite a bit of damage to Leonard in the process. This however started to tire him out and Leonard who now found himself stalking Hearns, sttarted to find Hearns and turn the screws in the very late rounds. In the end Hearns was spent from the damage Leonard inflicted and the stoppage was forced by Hearns's corner and the referee. A brilliant back and forth fight where both men showed incredible versaility but where the physical advantages and boxing skill of Hearns wasn't enough to make it through the equally physically impressive Leonard who really adjusted in the fight when confronted with a Hearns boxing off the back foot.

With Tito vs Hearns at some point its coming down to a shoot out and Hearns just never proved to have anywhere near the sort of recovery skills that Tito did. Both men are goliath punchers but in this case, I think that clearly favours Tito.

Hearns proved that he couldn't outbox Leonard in the ring despite what Leonard said. Leonard may have not jabbed with Hearns but he realised when and how to strike on a Hearns in two very different modes. If you want me to give you an example of someone who will stand there and do nothing but try and outbox Hearns, not rough him up? I can't give you one, I don't think that person exists. That being said Hearns wasn't a well rounded enough boxer or fighter to cover up him weaknesses to the smartest men in the welterweight division who have the size or ability to get to those weaknesses.

My opinion on the matter.
