Probably both their best fighting weights. Both failed in great "move-up" fights against the very best MW's ever. How long does this one go????
hearns is almost unbeatable at that weight imo. i would likely favour him over any fighter that competed in that divisions history. hearns KO
Pick 'em fight. On one hand I might be more inclined to wager on Tito because he could really really punch and had the better chin, often getting up to win, only getting stopped once, after receiving a boxing lesson from Hopkins. Hearns was game and would engage, and that chin and thin legs simply could not withstand that massive power. If he thought Sugar Ray's hook was hard, wait til he gets nailed by Tito's hook. On the other hand, Hearns was taller, rangier, quicker, and was a very fast starter, much faster of a starter than Tito, and could really blast that right in there, particularly early on. So he might just catch the slow starting Tito early and finish the job. If he doesn't, I think Tito eventually catches him somewhere and takes him out. Another view is that Hearns, if convinced to box cautiously, could outbox him, but I just don't see that happening for the distance. He'd engage Tito in there somewhere and either drill him or get drilled. Lots of potential permutations here, which is why I ultimately say it is a pick 'em.
I gotta go with Hearns. They both could punch but Tommy was the better boxer which usually makes the difference. Hearns had quicker hands and that jab would be a big problem for Trinidad. Id go..65% Hearns 35% Trinidad. Hearns had a tendency to war a little too much and forget his defense if Tito did floor him I think the fight is over. Im giving Trinidad a little more than a puncher`s chance.
I'd go with Hearns to get there faster...and he had that great jab to set things up. The pick is Hearns, but Trinidad's left hook absolutely ripped...explosive fight.
Trinidad was dropped from single punches, many times, at welterweight. This proves he had a bad chin. Getting up off the canvas showed he had good recovery powers. If you want to judge them only at 154lbs, Trinidad was dropped against Vargas. Hearns was never dropped at 154lbs. Hearns was put away by barrages 3-4-5 punches from Leonard and Hagler. Barkley was a one punch KO, yes.
Hearns stops the slow starting Tito early, somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd after hitting him with many jabs and BOOM lands that right...Tito would get up, but hurt and would get nailed by another right and stays down. Tito never faced anyone close to having Hearns power.
and let's be honest, trinidad was getting caught and hurt by right hands time and time again against vargas. once el feroz got into his rhythm he was able to rock tito. i don't see his stellar "dick punch when in trouble" strategy working here...
Hearns power would be too much for Tito, and I think he puts enough damage on Tito early, so his chin wouldn't be a problem.
This sounds like the realistic pattern that fight will unfold as, I could possibly see Tito hanging in there a little longer (5 - 6), if hearns isn't in rush to finish him when he's getting the knockdowns, but Hearns is in another class of fighter.
Tito's defence was really open, if Hearns really let's his hands and fireworks go early he could take him out in the first 2 rounds
Very true. The only two fighters I'd give a 50/50 shot in beating Hearns at that weight are the two Sugar Rays.
I don't get all this "Hearns was unbeatable at 154" when he didn't meet anyone who was both really good and natural at that weight. If he had beat Mugabi, McCallum and Jackson, fair enough, but the closest he came to this was ducking McCallum. Who Steward himself thought would beat him if I remember correctly.
