you look at some fighters like Mayweather and you can see they have all the talent in the world others havent got a tenth of the talent but through sheer grit, heart and determination become a champion

Dirrell v Froch, prime example, Dirrell has the natural tools to beat Froch, but doesnt seem to like getting hit, and when it gets a bit messy always seems to be looking for a way to not get clumped

Hopkins does nothing exceptionally, but all of the fundamentals well, and has a good combination of skill, and balls.

Junior Witter always struck me as a talented but not the most gritty of fighters, and not always prepared to get into the trenches and have a tear up, whereas Hatton was never as skilful but came forward for a row.

Eubank and Nigel Benn were 2 times, 2 weight world champs, Herol Graham fell short, and Clinton Woods became a world champ through I reckon more effort than skills

Tyson .. how much heart did he have when it started going against him ? Douglas, Holyfield, Lewis, Danny, and the big Paddy even a shot Tyson should have beat the last 2

I think heart/bottle/big bollocks goes a long way in the game but it needs to be combined with natural talent, as a shitload of one will only get you so far.

It matters a great deal. It's hard to put a value on which is more important, it all depends on levels of each.

An amazingly gifted fighter that has average intangibles would probably still beat a guy with little talent but all heart and determination.

But an amazingly gifted fighter that has no heart when things get tough, and no ability to overcome difficult situations in the ring? A fighter with exceptional intangibles can win that matchup later in the fight.

So yeah, its important. If you wanted to create a fighter but only had a certain number of points to award in each category I think you'd want to be fairly generous with intangibles. Otherwise there are going to be some great nights and some very disapointing nights, and probably ultimately an underachiever.

Thats a good call. I would also go with Froch Dirrell although I do feel Froch's skills get a little bit overlooked.

Steve Collins and Micky Ward spring to mind. Both achieved loads in boxing down to their toughness, never say die attitudes and self belief.
